Halation effects in vegas pro

KenKen wrote on 10/13/2023, 10:40 AM

Is there no way to add halation in VEGAS Pro? Of course, halation is different from just a glow, and refers to an effect that frames highlights with orange.

Halation is a useful effect that creates a filmy feel, so I think this feature is essential for VEGAS Pro, but I can't find a plug-in that is compatible with VEGAS Pro. Of course, you can simulate it by combining glow and compositing modes, etc., but I want something more complete. I won't be grading in VEGAS Pro unless halation is added to VEGAS Pro.

1. It's a pretty new thing in Davinci.

2. There will be OFX plugins for Vegas from Red Giant and Boris, if you believe crystal balls.

How are you currently achieving this effect?

If I remember correctly, it was bundled with Vegas 14 or 15, so you can assume it's there for some users, but otherwise just repurchase via NewBlue. In my opinion though, it doesn't meet the requirement of KenKen´s envisions at all, despite the similarity in naming.
To use Halation in Davinci Resolve, however, you have to buy the studio version....

As per @frmax 's comment, the Halation FX in DaVinci Resolve Studio is likely what you are looking for and maybe already using based on your description.

No NLE is the be-all-and-end-all of editing and native FX features other than with the simplest of projects. The trick is to use a combination of NLEs to achieve your creative requirements even if it means doing some processing in one NLE and other processing in another NLE - and that may likely mean rendering from one NLE in order to import the render into the other NLE.

It's gained tremendous popularity over the summer, hobbyists like the "instant grading" looks. I don't use Davinci much, menus are too small.

Chunks of Red Giant's Magic Bullet product already work with Vegas, I believe - in particular the Looks module, which has Halation. But it is far from free - and you have to pay for bits that do not work in Vegas ...

I'm satisfied because I found a plugin that works with Vegas. However, I hesitate to purchase Magic Bullet Suite for halation, so I would like it to be added as standard to Vegas. Thank you for your response :)

@KenKen Which plugin did you find that fulfilled your requirements?

As for requesting a similar plugin be provided native in Vegas there's a feature requests thread. Suggest you add it to the end of that and include a link to this thread.

@KenKen What's the name of the plugin? And where did you get it?
