Halt Windows10 Update will rendering....

set wrote on 1/8/2018, 8:28 AM

This has happened to me twice....

In the middle of rendering, leaving the computer doing its' job, and I'm going away from computer... AND.... after coming back, you found your computer, and your TOO-SMART Windows 10 PC restarting itself doing updating..., and make rendering fail...

Gosh! 😡😠

Is there anyway to halt that until I restart the system by myself ?!?!?

I really dislike the way Windows 10 handles update. It gives you no choice of when and what gets updated. I am surprised there is not more of an outcry. My only suggestion would be to disable your internet connection during rendering long projects.

Former user wrote on 1/8/2018, 9:41 AM

Cornico, those don't always work. I have disabled them and it still intrudes.

Defrag also gets switched back on with some windows updates.  It is my understanding that defrag is best not used with SSD's.  If you have switched defrag off it is worth checking that it is still switched off

I also have been able to hold back Windows 10 updates using the methods in Cornico's post, however I have been able to do it in Windows 10 Pro by using the Local Group Policy Editor as described here. I've been able to keep Win 10 at version 1511 so that Sony Media Manager still works. Didn't work in Windows 10 Home, despite installing the Local Group Policy Editor.

I think O&O Shutup is a necessity for Windows 10. It can be used to switch off Windows spyware and also updates.

Kit-As-Was, that sounds like interesting software. I have downloaded it and will try it out Thanks.

Interesting. Like a user-friendly regedit. If you pause the video on their page, you can see yellow triangles and red exclamation marks next to the Windows Update stuff. Presumably those are warnings and errors? Also if you read the Youtube comments, it doesn't work for some people. As I stated previously, my own experience with Win 10 Home is that Windows Update eventually has its way no matter what you do. I'm still hoping I'll be able to roll back updates though, if and when I need Media Manager to work on my laptop again.

With regard to set's issue, I seem to recall a way to set Windows Updates to only happen at certain times of the day or night.

set wrote on 1/10/2018, 12:10 AM

The Windows' request to restart for applying update was appear and I reject it (Pending it), but the OS asked this several times, plus I turn it off.. unfortunately at one time, I need to go far away from my pc.., and there it goes, the our-too-smart Win10 going updating itself...🙈

Haven't tried the O&O, but have download the update... will see on another big-render schedule.

Defrag also gets switched back on with some windows updates.  It is my understanding that defrag is best not used with SSD's.  If you have switched defrag off it is worth checking that it is still switched off

Defrag of SSD's initiated by yourself is indeed not a good idea, however windows is already aware of correct SSD treatment from windows 7 onwards, including TRIM support and (occasional) defragging SSD's.

The short answer to whether or not, Windows defrags SSD's: Windows does sometimes defragment SSDs, yes, it's important to intelligently and appropriately defrag SSDs, and yes, Windows is smart about how it treats your SSD.

Here is the long explanation from the windows storage team:

Storage Optimizer will defrag an SSD once a month if volume snapshots are enabled. This is by design and necessary due to slow volsnap copy on write performance on fragmented SSD volumes. It’s also somewhat of a misconception that fragmentation is not a problem on SSDs. If an SSD gets too fragmented you can hit maximum file fragmentation (when the metadata can’t represent any more file fragments) which will result in errors when you try to write/extend a file. Furthermore, more file fragments means more metadata to process while reading/writing a file, which can lead to slower performance.

As far as Retrim is concerned, this command should run on the schedule specified in the dfrgui UI. Retrim is necessary because of the way TRIM is processed in the file systems. Due to the varying performance of hardware responding to TRIM, TRIM is processed asynchronously by the file system. When a file is deleted or space is otherwise freed, the file system queues the trim request to be processed. To limit the peek resource usage this queue may only grow to a maximum number of trim requests. If the queue is of max size, incoming TRIM requests may be dropped. This is okay because we will periodically come through and do a Retrim with Storage Optimizer. The Retrim is done at a granularity that should avoid hitting the maximum TRIM request queue size where TRIMs are dropped.

You can change the way Win 10 asks for update by changing the method in RUN  gpedit.msc. Then select Administrative Components, then Windows Components, then Windows Updates.   Double click that folder. Double click       Configure Automatic Updates . In the new windows that appears select    Enable and then Option 2.   .  Then select OK . This will only notify you updates are avail but will NOT download them or install then unless you say so...

bitman wrote on 1/10/2018, 11:13 AM

Talking about windows 10 (and app) updates, did you know windows can steal upstream bandwidth to spread updates to other PC users?

As you can imagine it is well hidden!

If you do not like to play server to the rest of the world you can tune this "feature": go to update and security -> advanced options -> Delivery Optimisation (at the bottom) -> there you can disable allow downloads from other PC's, then go to bottom --> advanced options (here you have sliders to limit upload and download)...

I have two Win 10 home machines one 32 and one 64 bit. I've never had Windows Update run with O&O active. My 32 bit tablet has never been updated (it's a necessity as the new version updates are too big for the hard drive the manufacturer supplied the OS on! I've not watched the video but yes the exclamation points are warnings - they don't recommend disabling Windows Update but do make it possible.
