This week I had a sixty minute capture that would hang when I attempted to open the file in Vegas (8.0c and 9.0c). Thinking the file might be corrupt, I ran VideoReDo Quickstream fix but the resulting output stopped at fifty-two minutes. After tinkering with the problem for a while, I wondered if the Windows file itself was corrupt. I attempted to copy the file from one drive to another and Windows reported an error in the file. Running CHKDSK with the options to do a surface scan and repair bad blocks allowed me to edit the file.
The meaning of this to me is that I have come to suspect software first and look for a software fix for quite some time before I consider looking at hardware.
Fifteen years ago, I would have looked at the hardware first for almost any anomaly.
That drive is on my "watch list" though the recoverable error could have been caused by other factors. It is basically a scratch disk and I will run the unnamed manufacturer's tools on it soon.
