HDV and HDMI codecs

I've been a Vegas user since 4.0, now using 8.0 and 8.1. I've finally stated converting my gear to HD in the last year. I've always worked with SD AVI files rendered to AVI or MPEG2. I've searched many topics about HD codecs and editing but not quite clear yet. I'll be working with 2 forms of HD. HDV captures from my sony HDR-HC9, and HDMI AVI captures of super 8mm film through Intensity Pro card. My output will be Vimeo HD, or Blueray disc. My current list of codecs in Vegas 8 include AVI with drop down choices of HDMI 1920 x1080 versions. Sony MXF, without any drop down choices. There are also MPEG1,2,4. What should I use to render HDV 1440x1080 for Vimeo and or Blueray. And what can I use to render HDMI 1920x1080p to vimeo and or blueray?

I would render to HDV for Blu-ray and Sony AVC for Vimeo. You could also render to AVCHD for Blu-ray but when my source is HDV I prefer to deliver as HDV. I would do the same for the HDMI source (Blu-ray=HDV, Vimeo=AVC)

Thank you. The only problem is that I don't find a codec that specifies HDV 1440x1080?

Look under "Save As..." for M2T ... should see Main Concept & SONY. Either one should let you render out as HDV (1440x1080).

In Vegas 8.0c

For separate elementery streams for input into DVD Architect;

[video]
File Render As:

For Save As Type: Select Main Concept MPEG-2 (*.mpg, *.m2v, *.m2t, *.mpa)

Template: On the drop-down, select any one of the Blu-ray templates i.e. Blu-ray 1440x1080-24p, 25 mbps video stream

[audio]
File Render As:

For Save As Type: Dolby Digital AC3 Pro (*.ac3)

Template: On the drop-down, select:: Stereo DVD or 5.1 Surround DVD

BIG NOTE: Be sure to find Musicvid's settings for ac3 volume adjustments on this forum.

Vegas 9.0e has a Sony AVC template for Internet HD but in 8.0c you could roll your own from the Default Template. Start with Frame Size to select 1440x1080, actually, 1280x720 (per John Cline's correct post), then set the bit rate, render quality, etc. Be sure to save the template once you have the setting worked out. 6 mbps is the 9.0e starting point and it looks very good.

For Vimeo (and all other Internet video files) you must choose image dimensions that are the correct aspect ratio based on square pixels. 1440x1080 is actually intended to be displayed at 1920x1080 and the video player must know to stretch the 1440 horizontal pixels to 1920. Not every player recognizes the Pixel Aspect Ratio (PAR) and deals with it correctly. Use 1280x720 progressive for Vimeo (and YouTube for that matter.)

Thanks- I see all these choices under the MPEG2 templates now, for some reason the mpeg2 template drop down wasn't active before. I also see my AVC templates now... The bluray choices are only 8 and 15mbps, but there is a AVCHD template. It's all looking clearer now.
