HELP! How to un-nest file(s) out of my project

Derg wrote on 6/21/2023, 10:10 AM

I am using Vegas Pro 20 build 411.

Somehow I have unintentionally nested something in my project.

Every time my project is opened I get the attached warning. After closing the error window Vegas begins rendering several things on it's own. I think what may have happened was while adding video and audio files to my project timeline one video track caused a Vegas warning to pop up. It stated that video track was not suitable for editing and recommended rendering a Mp4 to replace it. I did not check in properties to evaluate the issue.

All I needed was the audio portion of the video track so I ungrouped the video from the unsuitable clip and deleted the video portion. I then split the audio, and aligned each half when they belonged in the Vegas timeline, then rendered a wav file. I replaced the unsuitable video/audio with the new wav file and deleted the the unsuitable video/audio file from the timeline and Project Media.

I thought that would be the end of the issue but each time I open my veg file I get the attached warning. After OK Vegas begins rendering several unknown clips for reasons unknown.

I'm not sure how or why my project got nested. I may have unintentionally mouse picked something or perhaps the unsuitable video has something to do with it.

My question is how to un-nest my project.

Thanks in advance!

I've used nesting for more than a decade and never once used the option in Vegas Pro (Alt+C) or right click on selected media and select the option:

The quick and dirty way is to rename the Vegas project file *.bak to *.veg assuming you haven't made any changes since the nesting occurred.

I still get the error but Vegas isn't rendering anything now. That's all that matters that was driving me crazy!

I did find which file caused the error warning but Properties didn't show anything unusual with file info. (?)

My question is how to un-nest my project.

Exactly the same way as removing any Media from your Project.

In the Project Media window, remove the nested project (.veg) file by clicking "Remove From Project."

I did find which file caused the error warning but Properties didn't show anything unusual with file info. (?)

Some streaming files take longer than other files to decode. You can transcode the files as the screen says, or you can ignore the warning.

Thanks. I didn't know what caused my issue. I have never used nested projects before. My suspicions was that one file that upon placing in the timeline that Vegas recommended it to be re-rendered to Mp4 was the issue. Deleting all references to that file in Project Media was the first thing I tried but it didn't solve the issue.

As I went through the Project Media I did notice a xxx.veg file which was the same as my working file. Deleting that solved the issue. That xxx.veg file looked out of place. Why would that be in Project Media? In any case all is opening as it should.

Maybe you are accidentally drag n drop a VEG file project to timeline? that will automatically make a nested project.

What you need to do is delete the missing item in the Project Media panel. But before you can do that, you need to give some arbitrary video of the same format the name of the missing file and place it in the same path as the missing file was in. Then when you open the project, you'll probably get a message that the file is not efficient, but hopefully you can go into Project Media and remove the item from the project (Delete). Then Save.

Had to be something like that. I any case deleting the .veg file didn't hurt anything for rendering my finished project and I no longer had all the craziness when reopening the project.
