Help with masking-cropping videos

Bandar00 wrote on 12/18/2016, 9:51 PM

Hi thanks for taking the time to read this, so the problem is that sometimes I would need to mask/crop a specific object/person from a video with no green screen to add it to other videos. However, the only way I know is to manually mask and use the anchor creation tool to individually select the shape on every frame! This is a problem because it takes a lot of time especially if the video is long.

Is there an easier, faster way to do this? Perhaps something like an auto masking tool? Where I can highlight the shape and it would auto select it based on color differences or something. Please I’m desperate and I would rather not waste days/weeks on a single clip! Also if there is no way to do it on sony vegas, do any plug ins like this exist or other video editing software? Thanks again

You need a plugin that can do rotoscoping. Something by Hitfilm or Boris would plug into Vegas, but I'm not sure exactly which of their products to recommend. External programs would include Adobe AfterEffects. Blackmagic Fusion would do what you want, and Blackmagic Resolve might, both of which are free.

BCC 10 with mocha tracking is worth a look. They have an extensive video library that shows several capabilities over on the Borisfx.com site. The Mocha version used is somewhat scaled down from the pro version, but very capable.

Thank you both so much. I tried mocha pro and it's perfect! I just have one small problem, How do I render the video or use it in sony vegas? I tried rendering it but only got a weird black and white vid. I also watched a tutorial on how to use it with sony vegas by extracting tracking data into a .txt file then opening it with BCC corner pin on vegas but that just gave me a sqaure of the video on the place of the orignal video and it had lines moving with it :s

Apparently the free version of Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve has some sort of motion tracking. Anyone using it? Is that right?

With Mocha Pro you can export those roto shapes to Blackmagic Fusion and do what ever you want. What are you looking to replace those shapes with?? Another option is to use the remove module in Mocha Pro.

If the object to be removed is stationary or moving, you can export a frame (or several frames) to an image editor like photo shop and paint out the person or object. Then you bring the frame back in as a cleanplate. Mocha will then replace your rotoshapes with the clean plate image.

If the object is moving, Mocha can replace the object with background generated from previous frames.

Search for tutorials for the Mocha Pro remove module.
