“Codec ID/Info               : High Efficiency Video Coding”

HEVC likely not supported in 13. Does GoPro site have a utility to convert to a more NLE friendly codec. Like... any other codec on the planet.

Can I be sure that after upgrade to vegas 15 I will be able to edit this kind of files ?

john_dennis wrote on 10/2/2017, 1:22 PM

You can run a 30 day trial for free.

I would also add that unless you have a very fast computer you are not going to like the performance editing HEVC files. You are probably going to want to transcode the files to something easier to edit. So you could stay with 13 if that is what you want.

Create a proxy for the files. Do your editing. When you are done editing, replace the proxies with the original files using the replacement media in the project media.

Hmmm.. i did download Vegas 15 trial version. Plus is that it's reading files but there is something wrotn with audio... one of stereo channels is what was recorded but on the second channel there are onlu glitchy noise :/ in vegas 13 everything is ok.

And about proxys... if i can't preload oryginal media into timeline, will it be changed that easy after changing proxys to normal files ?

I see over on the Gopro forum that this is an issue (no surprise) for Prem Pro and Final Cut too. Does the GoPro Quik app play them? Can you export from Quik in an NLE friendly format?

Funny that they killed Gopro Studio just as they launch a camera with a "bleeding edge" codec and formats.

artur-m wrote on 10/2/2017, 2:42 PM

Heeh I didn't try Quick, couse I'm running Windows 8.1 and there is 10 needed :P... BTW Proxys doesn't work :/ I just tried it

Even if they did not want to keep/maintain the full editor type thing of studio, just keeping the transcode feature would have been good. Even a non-trimming transcoder would be useful. Quik is just a cruel joke.

@artur-m

So the first task is going to be to find some program that can read the footage so it can be transcoded to something else. Care to upload a SHORT piece of footage to dropbox or similar?

Kinvermark wrote on 10/2/2017, 4:45 PM

@NormanPCN

Ya, makes me wonder how the heck anyone will edit the Fusion VR stuff? I mean, I can see having a standalone program for stitching, but who wants to do pan & scan (from the "overcapture" in GoPro language) outside of their NLE?

Here is a bit of info from GoPro:

https://gopro.com/help/articles/block/hevc

Basically, they suggest using Handbrake ( a free third party utility ) to transcode from HEVC to H.264. That's not lossless, but may be fine for what you are doing.

artur-m, besides sharing a sample file (e.g. on mega.nz, wetransfer, mediafire, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive etc..) as Kinvermark suggests, please let us know your system specs. i.e. CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version.

You can get very editable AVC/H.264 files via x264 (in Handbrake or ffmpeg) by using the "fast decode" option.

A lot of people in the Hitfilm forum have used some settings I came up with to good effect. fast decode, short GOP, b-frames off. Hitfilm is a bit slower than Vegas and a lot of people have very average machines. The transcode helps. Even high overhead AVC can be tough to edit let alone HEVC.

Nick Hope my specs are:

I7 7700k

16 GB DDRR 2600MHz Ram

GTX 1070

SSD 250 MB

And some other stuff that it's not so important now i think :)

Can you share a small sample so we can play? :)
