How do I eliminate the stuttering when playing the timeline?

I have ditched the Adobe CC overpriced subscription and returned to Vegas Pro and Sound Forge. Yesterday when I was editing some old veg files created in version 11, I noticed that there was an overabundance of stuttering when playing the time-line. The only effects were from iZotope using Elements 3, and Ozone. Only two tracks were playing.

I looked for a way to increase the RAM or whatever else I might need to to eliminate the stuttering. I have a I7, 16 GB RAM on a Windows 10 laptop.

At first I thought it was because I was using a 5400 RPM data drive, but when I copied all the files to an external 500 GB SSD drive I still got the stuttering. There are no video tracks in any of the 20+ vegs I was working with. My system drive is a 1 GB PCIE SSD.

(The article generally assumes you have video media on your timeline. Do you?)

Thank you Nick. I'll try some of those suggestions and see if they help my audio issue, and definitely try the others when editing video.

Rebooting helped, but there is no logical reason why my laptop running Vegas 16 with only two tracks should still be stuttering with only two or three iZotope effects on the two tracks. I now have a new problem - so far only detected on one of my vegs and only on the solo track. This one is intermittent. In the middle of a word, the gain suddenly goes down and then back up - only for a brief moment, less than a second. This doesn't happen every time you play the same notes, but it has always occurred when I have rendered it and then listened to it.

I am seriously thinking upgrading to Vegas 16 was a big mistake.

There are long-standing issues with VSTs in Vegas. Here's one current thread mainly about Waves, but the problems can affect other VSTs too.

The latter issue sounds like it is due to a plugin such a compressor. Are you sure it's not just one of your iZotope effects that's doing it?

Also by default Vegas has 3 plugins on each audio track. I would remove those, and also set new audio tracks to not have them by emptying a track of them then choosing "Set default track properties" from the context menu on the track header.

I’ve had it with Vegas. Thanks for your help.
