How does Vegas Pro 8.0c handle HDV footage?

Videojohn wrote on 1/31/2009, 10:22 AM
Hi All,
I have a big documentary project (40 hours of footage!) shot in HDV 720p (25fps) with the JVC GY-HD111E and I wonder how Vegas Pro 8.0c handle native .m2t files (I previously had some big problems with editing HDV files with Vegas Pro 8 (I don't remember if it was .0b or already .0c); Capture Video and Audio Streams were not of equal length!!!! and Vegas was crashing each time I opened the Media Pool with thumbnails!!!)

Is the workflow of version Pro 8.0c stable and easy to use .m2t files?

Thank you for the help,
VideoJohn

I haven't had any issues with m2t files. I have captured from tape, as well as directly from my Sony HVR DR60 hard drive unit. I'm using 8.0c at the moment. I don't do anything fancy, and I'm feel I'm still a noob. I do notice that when I capture, there is a few frames at the end of a clip that belong to the next clip, which is a nuisance of course. I experience no crashing of any kind.

But can you visualize all thumbnails in Media Pool?
And dos Capture function with scene detection activated make clips at each cut in the tape? Or is the capture/cutting process random? (I also had this problem sometimes!!)

If you are referring to 'Media Pool' and the 'Project Media' window the same, then yes I see the thumbnails. And yes, scene detection cuts your clips just as you recorded them individually. That nuisance couple of frames at the end of each clip, I have seen in other NLE's also, I guess it just happens.

Ok thanks, I just wanted to be sure that Vegas Pro 8.0c handle well HDV footage because I've got so many footage that before starting with Vegas (and importing all 40 hours tapes!!!) I need to know I will be able to edit without difficulties.

By the way, any other tips or infos to know about editing HDV (720p 25fps) footage with Vegas Pro 8.0c?

Sorry no, I haven't done any 720p editing.

I get the same thing with one of my cams. I use HDVsplit as a result.

I use 1080-50i and 1080-60i HDV in 8.0C and it's stable for me.

I also use HDVSplit because of those extra frames that Vegas captures.

If I ever get an HDV clip that Vegas doesn't like, which is very rare, MPEG2Repair (a freeware utility) invariably fixes it for me.

8c / xp pro sp3 / 3gb ram / e6600 cpu.

for clients mostly long form from around 10 > tapes.

m2t's on the timeline, some cc'ing, titling, etc.,

been rock solid. but i make everything vegas friendly (png's - max 3k x 3k if they're to be tracked, no 'weird' video formats on the actual time line, etc.,)

good luck.

btw. 1080 - 50i - have no idea about 720p, sorry

Ok thanks to all. So nobody has had 720p 25fps experience?....

And what is the HDV split that you are referring to blink3times?

It's a freeware HDV capture program. It's quite handy and works well. Google for it and you'll find it.

All my current work is 720 30P from a GY-HD110U. Most output is BD, but occasionally I also render to SD. No problems capturing or editing with 8.0c, except occasional crashes and hangs with smart rendering.

Ok thanks LJA, I'll go for it.
