How to get MVP 14 to indicate clips used in media files

Len Kaufman wrote on 1/5/2017, 9:19 PM

Well, if I learned nothing else today (and I have), I've learned not to ask for a new feature, but rather to ask how to access a feature. In the media window, is there a way to have an indication showing which files have already been used? When you place a clip on the timeline, a highlight or something shows up on the corresponding thumbnail in the media files box?

If you switch to the detail view on the project media window, there is a "use count" column

Len Kaufman wrote on 1/5/2017, 9:43 PM

Thanx, GJeffrey. Yes, I saw that, but it would be much more useful if some indication of use could be seen when looking at the thumbnails. I'm now working on a project with over 1000 clips, and trying to remember what has been used is daunting.

And you can MOVE that Colum so it appears at the beginning of the Rows for easy viewing.

Do a Search on COUNT is larger than 0 zero.

Len Kaufman wrote on 1/5/2017, 9:54 PM

Thanx, Grazie. But I'd like to be doing my selections visually, from the thumbnails, and not from a list.

Grazie wrote on 1/5/2017, 10:05 PM

This method is far better, unless I'm missing something? What's better than doing a Search for example finding 17 unused Media amongst a 1,000 mixed items? You're going to do this by viewing each and every Media - the 1,000 - to identify just these 17, by pictorially interrogating them?

i have to be misunderstanding you're wishes.

It might get a little tedious doing one clip at a time, but Right + Click on an event in the Media Pool and choose Select Timeline Events. The events on the timeline are highlighted and the cursor moves to the first occurrence.

Hi Grazie....Perhaps I'm not explaining myself well. I would like to look at all the thumbnails of available media and see which ones have already been used. If I'm looking at a list, then I would have to write out or print the list, and then go back to the thumbnails to continue selecting files, as appropriate to the video I'm doing.

If the indications of use were on the thumbnails, then I could choose the unselected files as appropriate to tell the story. I've seen other NLEs that do that; I believe Pinnacle is one such.

"If I'm looking at a list, then I would have to write out or print the list, and then go back to the thumbnails to continue selecting files, as appropriate to the video I'm doing."

From the Details view, you can sort by Use Count, right + click ones with a 0 count, then select Open in Trimmer. Viewing the video will hint about how it applies to your story.

Grazie wrote on 1/5/2017, 10:52 PM

Nope, I'm not getting you Guys at all. I have to be missing something.

Do the SEARCH for COUNT = 0. No need to use Details View and Sort.

This gives me a NEW Bin Labeled "0" - meaning ALL the ZERO Count Media within it - done! In there I can see thumbnails of ALL the unused Media. What's not to like here?

john_dennis wrote on 1/5/2017, 10:59 PM

True, Grazie.

Len Kaufman wrote on 1/5/2017, 11:05 PM

Not trying to be difficult Grazie. Just trying to get it to work the way I work. If I do as you suggest, I can't see thumbnails of those that I have used at the same time as those that I haven't used, so that I can compare. That kind of visual selection is how I make my choices. I may have to somewhat similar clips, and if one is not showing up because it is already used, I might inadvertently choose one that is too similar, just because it shows up in the unused group.

Grazie wrote on 1/5/2017, 11:13 PM

John, now go ahead and explore those other SEARCH options. It's a great litle BOOLEAN Search facility.

Oh here's the other BONUS. We can RENAME that Bin to whatever we wish: Grazie Forgotten Clips; Grazie . . .

Another Bonus : 1) Add Searching Filters 2) Conditions and NESTING Searches by adding another 3) Condition :

Loads to like here.

Please Len, try this again? I did suggest this prior to today.

Grazie: All that you say is true and useful. However, if I understand Len, he wants to be able to look at all the thumbnails in Project Media and see a red dot or blue "x" or whatever in the corner of all the clips that have been used. I too would find this extremely useful when working on large projects.

Grazie wrote on 1/5/2017, 11:35 PM

"Not trying to be difficult Grazie." - No, that's my Crown!

Here's your Title: "How to get MVP 14 to indicate clips used in media files" - I've offered a way that you and others here to do this. So, not even John's Detail View would assist here - correct? What you're after is to be able to quickly visually Compare the Thumbnails - yes? Well how would that assist you to be aware of just WHAT inside those Thumbnails>Media you would WANT to use? Ideally we would need a way to view both USED and UNUSED and THEN maybe CHECK that which you fancy.

Maybe here's something worth exploring.

Given that the 2 Clips would have been SHOT at around the same time, ostensibly you could do a search on one or a nest of the following Filters/Variables 1 thru 4:

This would deliver - haven't tried this bit, but YOU could - a NEW Bin with the options to Visually VIEW and Compare Thumbnails.

What do you think?

It's all good.

Me too! But rather than just a red dot or blue "x", I suggest superimposing the actual used count on the thumbnail (or under/next to it). Even better if it somehow differentiated between video and audio stream, as currently we get a used count of "2" if both video and audio are used, and that can be confusing.

NickHope wrote on 1/6/2017, 12:06 AM

And even even better if it could show up in the Vegas Explorer window as well as the Project Media window.

Grazie wrote on 1/6/2017, 1:32 AM

So, no there isn't, and yes you should send a Product Suggestion. 😌

Len Kaufman wrote on 1/6/2017, 7:42 AM

Thank you all. JackW (above) nailed what I wanted exactly. Nick, that's a good add-on (Explorer) to my request Grazie...as I am the one that shot the clips, and pretty recently, just seeing the thumbnails is a pretty good reference to what was in the clip.Additionally, before starting on this epic editing project (a week's river cruise on the Mekong River...Cambodia and Vietnam), I reviewed pretty much all of the clips, so that I would know what I'm dealing with. Consequently, the thumbnails are all I need to make the choices.

Grazie...what is the best place to post the Product Suggestion? Also, as I apparently had so much difficulty explaining what I was looking for, can you suggest a succinct way of expressing this in the Product Suggestions?

It would be a total pleasure. And thank you for recognising both my withering, enormous intellect and ability to write succinctly.

As far as I know there isn't a product suggestion procedure like there was with SCS. Set and I are adding all suggestions like this to a post in the moderators' forum so Magix can find them all in one place.

Being so lucky that my projects normally contain only up to a few hundred clips I have the program Directory Opus on my right 32 inch monitor showing the clips as clear and large 80x45 millimeters thumbnails.

As editing goes on Vegas put a .sfk file at each thumbnail indicating it has been used at least one time.

Sometimes during the editing process I delete all .sfk files and also do a Remove all unused media in the Vegas Project Media.

After reopening the project Vegas builds all the .sfk files - and now it is easy to see in the Directory Opus thumbnail list which clips are actually used and which are not.

It is nice to be able to identify the unused clips so easily and at the same time to be able to see what they contain in such a large thumbnail.

I have asked the Directory Opus developers if they could leave out showing the .sfk files and instead mark the .sfk-thumbnails file with a small dot or the like - but they would not consider it at the time I asked. It is not really a problem as I can have 7x7 = 49 thumbnails on one screen - so there is plenty of space anyway.

And I'm voting for this with both of my hands!

...And an FX symbol overlay on project Media thumbnails (in the bottom-right corner like on events), pretty please! Would I like to add...
