MPEG Streamclip does not need Quicktime Pro; it works with the free version, and that is plainly stated on their web site. And it makes quite good H.264 .mov files using the Quicktime writing library, which is what the client in question seems to want.

> @ Laurence - When I render to Quicktime .mov from Vegas, am I not making a true Quicktime .mov video? It certainly seems like I am. I can use the Avid or MP4 codecs as well as several others.

When you make a Quicktime MOV file in Vegas, you will not see h.264 as an option even if you own Quicktime Pro. It doesn't matter if you use 32-bit or 64-bit Vegas or Quicktime. It simply doesn't show up. Avid codecs show up... Blackmagic codecs show up... everything except h.264 shows up. I don't know why. It just isn't there.

If you are seeing it on your PC, can you post a screen shot of that option in the codec drop-down? Don't be fooled by the MPEG-4 Video option. This is very old and is actually h.263 not the newer h.264.

> @ ushere - as i wrote earlier - no show under vegas 64bit. i'm beginning to think it's another (general) noshow in 64bit.

I don't believe it has anything to do with 64-bit vs 32-bit. Vegas simply does not see the h.264 codec that you get when you purchase Quicktime Pro. It has always been like this.

thanks jr - was wondering why.....

that said, i have been delivering sony mp4 to all my clients without any problems whatsoever (even to the dear old apple people!) though a while back i did have a few practise runs with handbrake just in case.

Perhaps it is something to with the fact that Quicktime Amateur is the same installation as Quicktime Professional, except that you enter a code to convert to the latter. The H.264 coder has to be hidden for the Am version (so that the likes of us don't use it without paying). Just so long as the Pro version can see it is all that Apple cares.

OK, I was fooled. I thought the MPEG-4 video option was h.264. Fortunately, the last client I gave an encode done this way was fooled as well. ;-)

Which brings this thread full-circle to the original question.
Conclusions:
My client is an idiot.
Vegas does not encode using the h.264 codec
Vegas Quicktime files encode using the h.263 codec
Vegas *does* use the h.264 within the AVC encoder.
