Changing an AVC file to .mov extension does not make it a QuickTime file. There may be some question on what HE will accept as .h264 since there are multiple flavors. I would try sending him the file rendered in Vegas using the save as type. QuickTime 7, pick and template. Then go to the custom and set all of the correct settings for your video, then under video format, choose MPEG-4. If that does not satisfy him then he wants one from QuickTime Pro and you need to bite the bullet.

It isn't that he is right, it is just cheaper to get him off your back and get him satisfied so you can get other things done.

Yes, that's the only solution. Vegas cannot make an h.264 Quicktime file. I bought Quicktime Pro for exactly the same reason.

Ya gotta ask yourself... is it worth $29.99 to shut your client up? (I'm guessing the answer is a big YES) :-D

Renaming the .m2ts to .mov usually works to fool an FCP editor.

QuickTime7 was my first attempt, but the client says: "it's not h.264".
Well, no, it's h.263, which on the web, you won't see any difference.
But, the client says: "it's not h.264".

Yes, your client is an idiot.
An AVC file, whether encoded Sony or Mainconcept or QT Pro or x264, is h264 by definition.
That is true whether it ends in .mp4 or .mov or .m4v or whatever the latest iphone gimmick extension is. You are correct, when wrapping h264, the MP4 and MOV containers are interchangeable enough for most practical purposes in the Quicktime environment.

In spite of the fact that your client is wrong, you can make him happy by installing Quicktime (I don't believe you need Quicktime Pro though I do have it). Now render to Quicktime from Vegas and change the compression format within the Quicktime render settings to H.264. Once you have a setup configured, save it as a preset for the future.

Whoa. h264 is available in Quicktime custom settings within Vegas?
What version? Is it 10 only?
rs170a wrote on 12/1/2010, 7:32 PM
It must be because Laurence has QuickTime Pro installed.
I just looked and Pro 8, 9 and 10 only show h.261 and h.263 as options for me.

I just installed QT-Pro to encode the file as h.264, and, no, it doesn't show up in the list in Vegas. Just h.261 and h.263.

Bundle the 29.95 into your final bill for this guy.
You may not need to use it again for a while.

It's going to be a repeat client, so I'll get the $30 back over a few exports. fortunately, once they accept my file format, the jobs are cookie cutter.

Me too, in both 8.0c and 10.0a. But I'm still on QT 7.6.2 (Pro) for compatibility with Vegas Pro 8.0. Maybe it's been added to a later version?

no show here either in 10a 64bit / qtpro installed (shows up in qt under export)

So what is the procedure for making a h264 mov? Is it made within vegas 10, or is it made within QT pro? If it is QT pro, what file do you start with?
musicvid10 wrote on 12/2/2010, 11:27 AM
Honestly, I make an h264/MP4 in Handbrake or Vegas and rename it .mov
Unlike Steve, I haven't had one kicked back out of a few delivered this way.

I'm not sure what part of my answer wasn't clear. It cannot be done in Vegas. You must render a file and convert it in Quicktime Pro. I would install the Avid NDxHD codec and use that as an intermediary between Vegas and QT.

I trust your word over mine any day in regards to these things JR, but I don't understand. When I render to Quicktime .mov from Vegas, am I not making a true Quicktime .mov video? It certainly seems like I am. I can use the Avid or MP4 codecs as well as several others.

Go to http://www.squared5.com and download MPEG Streamclip. Will convert many formats to Apple spec .MOV and is free, as long as you don't need to use .M2T files.
ushere wrote on 12/3/2010, 1:08 AM
kcw,

why not m2t?
kcw wrote on 12/3/2010, 1:25 AM
To use MPEG files Streamclip requires the Quicktime MPEG playback component.

Will SUPER do the job? (Assuming you don't mind the horrible web site.)

Then there is MediCoder, with a similar mine field web site. (You want it free, you have to prove that you can read carefully!)

Try Winnydows Xvid4PSP 5 or 6 for simple remuxing streams from Vegas AVC encoded files into new MOV
NickHope wrote on 12/4/2010, 7:19 PM
MPEG Streamclip works well but on my system I need to disable "Enable DirectDraw acceleration" in the Quicktime Preferences otherwise it crashes when rendering from an HDV file. It's fine rendering from DV.

@ Avanti - Within Quicktime Pro you can start with any video that the Quicktime Player will open. Then click File > Export. If you then click on Options you'll see the settings. On my system it's defaulting to H.264.

@ Laurence - Where are you finding the H.264 option in the Vegas Quicktime options? I have Quicktime Pro + Vegas 8 + Vegas 10 and I can't find it anywhere, and it's sounding like others can't find it either.

as i wrote earlier - no show under vegas 64bit. i'm beginning to think it's another (general) noshow in 64bit.
