How to make edits in Multicamera shoot?

"What is the difference between making edits simply on the multicamera track, or a step further with the mode enabled?"
-- sorry, can't get the question...? what mode is 'enabled'?

It seems the worst thing you can do to screw up the works is expand back to multiple tracks. That seems to be where all the problems come in. Is it recommended to just leave the multicamera track enabled for the duration of the project?

I think that's depends on your project... But by enabling Multicamera track editing turned on, you won't see cross dissolves - that's one...

That's why, which I thought that it was just me doing this :) - is duplicating video track (as 'musicvid' suggest too). Previously I did this for 'backup' purposes of keeping synchronized-clips so I can still access to that whole clip if I need to or because the multicamera editing mode will just limiting my editing which I should edit normally without that mode. When I need to replace that multicam part of it, I just take from original one, replace it on above track. (and VegasPro allowed us to have this 'abroad workspace' = 'unlimited tracks')

This is an archived VEG project, from point of 37:31:08, previous it is intro, normal edit, after that, it is multicam part. During that time I expand them again.. - tough work. but if picture condition between cameras is already match - acceptable, track 17-18-19 may still be merged until finish - no need to expand back.
The group track of 21-23 is my 'backup'. but in the end you will see I edit from that track again.
Well - maybe seen very complicated.

Mike, I often create MC tracks that need a section (your ringing phone) cut out of it. What I do is to simply edit the MC track normally, but place a marker (named 'trim') roughly where I'm going to chop a section out. After the MC edit, go back to those sections, delete what you want, via the usual 'S' key, then use auto ripple (full) to drag everything to the right to fill the gap that's left. This is just a less 'technical' way (which suits me :-) ) to do what peter describes above.

Hi Arthur, when you say "edit the MC track normally," you mean that you first create your multicamera track, then enable multicamera editing, and go through and insert all your camera cuts. As you're doing that you place markers where edits need to be made.

After all the camera cuts are inserted, do you then disable MC editing mode before making your edits? Or do you leave it enabled? Or does that not make any difference? Thanks for posting your workflow!

Arthur, good news! Your workflow worked just about perfectly! I was able to make all the camera cuts, then come back and make the edits at the markers. Just one thing I need to solve: When I go back to make the edits and press S to split at the marker, I notice that sometimes it's not splitting all the events, and I need to keep selecting all and creating a new group so that when I hit S, it splits both the multicamera video track, as well as the audio track. Is this normal? It seems like I should just have to make a new group one time, not over and over again.

My method is similar to Authors. The thing I do to split all events and audio on all tracks at the same time is select and group every event on the time line. This allows me to split every event on all tracks at the same time. After I'm done splitting all the tracks select all the tracks and ungroup them.
MikeLV wrote on 11/4/2012, 2:20 PM
Byron, that's exactly what I did, but somehow, the group doesn't stay grouped as I made the individual edits. It's not the end of the world, I just have to be mindful that when I split, that everything splits. If it doesn't, I have to make a new group.

Unless an Event is Locked, clicking on an unused track at the desired point then hitting S will split everything. If you select one or more events, S will only split those selected.
MikeLV wrote on 11/4/2012, 7:40 PM
None of my events were locked, but perhaps like you said, I didn't have all the events selected that I wanted to split. So you're saying that choosing no events as well as choosing all events then hitting the split key splits everything (at that point)?

- try it!

Yes Mike, I disable MC before making the extra trims. Also, go back to MC and 'expand to multiple tracks'. As Peter sez, click on an empty bit of TL and everything that's not locked should split at that point.

Splitting, grouping, track and event selection, and the like works exactly the same on a multicam timeline as on any other. Expanding the track to see the A- and B-roll subtracks does not change or lose any existing edits. It just stacks them visually.

Going back and forth from multicam edit to normal edit mode may seem a bit bothersome at first, but becomes habit after a few trials.

setiawan3d,

If you will take the "s" out of "https" in your dropbox link, the graphics will show on the forum. jfyi

Maybe I'll make a work file and mess around with it some more. But I distinctly remember when I expanded the tracks out, that I lost all fades and it just seemed like it caused a bunch of problems. Is there any disadvantage to not expanding the tracks out after I'm finished with the multicam stuff? I was able to finish the project yesterday using Arthur's first workflow and I never expanded the tracks back out.

It's a visual thing for old editors who started life that way, just like the trimmer.
Don't use it if you have any reservations.

thanks musicvid - learning markup post a bit - tried find these codes since many times ago...

MikeLV, that's the limitation of Vegas multicam system right now, when you expand them again, you will lose any transition you made before.
I hope they can make further improvement for this multicam workflow..., at least make it more interactively (perhaps develop some kind of special track group mode).
