Image stabilization

Hello, I was wondering if anyone is experienced with video stabilization. I currently use Vegas Pro 14, which obviously is a couple years old now. What I do is get video of Air Show's with my HD camera. Love filming the Blue Angels & Thunderbirds and the low flying aerobatic performers. The image stabilization makes the video look better. However my issue is whenever an airplane flies low to the ground passing ground objects, like trees and buildings in the back ground, and passing by a sharp cumulus cloud in the sky, the video gets so completely choppy which gets irritating after a while, probably because the Vegas stabilizer is trying to focus on those objects too. I was wondering if there's a way to prevent that. I am thinking of upgrading to the latest version available of Vegas Pro. Thanks.

Have to say, I am not sure that the Vegas stabilizer has been enhanced since Vegas 14 (which is 8 years old). You could always download the trial and test

You are facing two issues that cause your Video Preview to look choppy, both of which are a temporary overload of your CPU cycles:

1. The added Stabilizer Effect puts a heavy load on your CPU, causing jittery playback.

2. The complex detail-in-motion in your source video, which uses Intterframe Compression, places a heavy load on your CPU, causing jittery playback.

Possible solutions include:

a. Make a Video Proxy (look it up).

b. Reduce the number of timeline effects until you Render, reducing the system load.

c. Set your Preview at something other than Best.

d. Use a GPU-accelerated encoder, such as Magix AVC.

e. Consider a faster processsor. Intel 9th-12th Generation i7 processors are generally good.

I hope this gets you started toward some solutions. Be sure to share them here and ask questions as you go.

@John-Davison There has been a huge improvement between the stabilizer of VP14 (that stabilizer is also still available in VP22 as deprecated feature) and the stabilizer of VP22. Without seeing your footage, it's hard to say if it does a better job than the legacy stabilizer of VP14, but probably it will.

Not sure how I can post a video sample. But here's my description. Let's say that i'm filming the Blue Angels against the clear blue skies, right? I'm assuming you've seen the Blue Angels at an Air Show before or are familiar with them. When I use image stabilization on Vegas Pro 14.0, the image comes out pretty smooth and stable. But then all of the sudden when the Blue Angels turn on their smoke system in the sky and make trails of smoke in the sky, suddenly the video gets choppy.

Or how about this? I'm filming a helicopter flying against the clear skies near New York City. The image is stable because there are no objects in the sky except the helicopter in the image. But then when the Helicopter passes close by the Empire State Building in the background, the video gets extremely chopping , the helicopter gets so shaky in the image because of the motion of the passing building in the back ground.

That's the issue i'm having. As for regarding your descriptions about VP14 and VP22, i'm assuming you meant Vegas Pro 14 and Vegas Pro 22. Well. . . . I guess i'll try the Vegas Pro 22 trial if that's available and see what features it has regarding stabilization. Wish I could have a tutor available to show me the features and how to use them to get rid of those choppy spots in my videos, if that's even possible.

... the video gets so completely choppy ... probably because the Vegas stabilizer is trying to focus on those objects too.

That is very likely what is happening. While stabilisation can sometimes be a hit-or-miss process and different stabilisers are better for some stab tasks but not others, My thinking at this time is that the approach would be to get the stabiliser to focus as much as possible on the aircraft while ignoring the rest of the image as much as possible. This can be done in Vegas Pro 22 using 'Expert' mode in VP22's Video Stabilization FX.

Using a stock image of an aircraft from Vegas Content and selecting 'Expert' in the FX's User View, it was a fairly straightforward task to set the Expert Mode controls as follows:

  • Set the number of grids to maximum
  • Set the Width and Height sliders to outline the aircraft
  • Then hit the 'Analyze Motion' button

In this example, the FX did a good job of stabilising the image - but then there were no distractions that might have otherwise upset it.

Not sure how I can post a video sample.

@Dexcon  Bingo!!! That might be the solution right there!!! In that case I better try the Vegas 22 trial and start experimenting. Hoping to make better HD Air Show videos. Thank you so much for this. I'm going to keep this response as a guidance.

Not sure how I can post a video sample. But ...

Actually, that might be a good thing to know if you plan to seek peer assistance on this forum.

  • Using the forum upload feature does not help anyone with troubleshooting your issues, because the video is re-encoded for the forum player, erasing all of the essential metadata and original properties.
  • Therefore, the standing advice here is to upload your original video source to Drive or Dropbox, and post the Public Link to such files here in your forum post.
  • Please have a close look at the information you should be prepared to post in order to get clear answers from your peers; otherwise, speculation and irrelevant responses are certain to result:

Ok, here's one of my clips. And the screen shots is to show how I set things up. I'm not really quite happy with how the video clip came out.

As I mentioned, uploading video to the forum is not helpful, becaquse all of the original quality and metadata has been lost in the AWS conversion. Best of luck.
