Importing MP3 audio files & loud screeching results...

So I've got a new laptop and installed Sony Vegas Pro 18, the video files seem to work fine and the audio on those is fine but importing an mp3 file just ends up with a really loud screeching sound... I've looked online and the problems were fixed for older versions of the program by going into internal preferences and doing the FALSE in the so4 bit but that doesn't work with the new version... Would really appreciate any advice on what to do as I feel like I've wasted a lot of money.

Sony Vegas Pro 18 does not exist.
In my Vegas Pro 18 it is no problem to add a mp3 and play it, look

What are the properties of your mp3's?

Convert the MP3s to PCM <.wav> on-line. MP3s should avoided in the editing stage anyway. There are many free online conversion sites like zamzar.com
