Importing old project -- error with .dv files

Kalvos wrote on 4/21/2023, 3:27 PM

Hi all,

I'm importing a 70-minute opera production from December 2011. It was created problem-free in Movie Studio 15. There are 20 tracks and tons of slices, crossfades, effects, etc.:

Vegas Pro 20 build 370 (Windows 10 Pro, Intel i7, AMD Radeon R9 200) won't import the .dv files used in six of the tracks. It reports it cannot find the files; you can see the blank tracks in the image above (tracks 3, 4, 9, 10, 15 and 16). Here is the error dialog:

The files are present and play fine in VLC. Here is the codec info from VLC (as there's no "Properties" option available for those files in Vegas):

Is there any way to import these .dv files? If not and I transcode them, will opening the project in Vegas allow me to use the 'search for missing files' dialog to place the transcoded files without losing all the crossfades and effects?

Thank you!

Dennis

I may be wrong, but I think these are created by QT or a QT equivalent. You might try installing QT to see if it can read.

@Kalvos

Post the Mediainfo report for the problem files for more information.

These files were provided by the videographer. As I said, Movie Studio 15 created the original video and they worked fine there, and VLC plays them fine now. Does VLC know something Vegas doesn't?

If QuickTime is needed for that media, go to Options/Pferences/Deprecated Features (tab) in Vegas Pro 20 and check the 'Enable the QickTime plugin' option. QT is turned off by default in Vegas Pro because, as advised by the Vegas team some years ago, Apple ceased Windows support for QT in 2016 and leaving it active in Vegas Pro may cause problems as both Windows and Vegas Pro are further developed.

Had to download the QT installer. I shudder putting Apple anything on my computer.

I agree but we gather it worked.

I must admit that I still don't understand why VLC has no trouble playing it while Vegas can't even see it as a video file. Thanks to the help here, I was able to get a new higher-resolution render of the opera at 16:9.

My understanding is that VLC has its own encoders. But they are not available to other software.
