Incredible large proxy files from 1440p MP4 source..

dape wrote on 11/10/2018, 8:05 AM

Hello, so.. i bought again the VP16 upgrade (i refunded it few weeks ago) because there is really no editor that can handle videos with multiple audio tracks so easy but.. why for the name of the might god are the proxy files SO BIG ?

I have a 2560x1440 60 fps MP4 from a OBS recording with three audio tracks in 1,4 GB size. Something like 2 Mbit/s, 160-256 Kbits audio.

And after the proxy file was created i have noticed it's.. 11,7 GB. Eleven gigabytes! 11x the size of the original ??? Isn't the proxy file supposed to be smaller for easier timeline preview and editing..? what the heck ?

Seems logic to me, that proxy is less compressed than your OBS file

I did a test with 30 sec FHD OBS and made a proxy in VPro 16 of it. Look to the MediaInfo of the OBS file and the renamed proxyfile and compare.

I see, thanks j-v.. So i guess i should edit straight to the 1440p file then. It took kindof forever to render the proxy and it's too big to store for future edits.

Depends on the hardware you use for editing in Vegas.
I don't need to use proxies included strong compressed 4K AVC on my hardware.

Well, i have a Ryzen 7 2700x with 16 gb of ram, ssds all over and a GTX1080 but i remember VP15 struggled at Good/Half with a 80 Mbit/s 1440p MP4..

Vegas Pro's proxy files conform to XDCAM HD standard and the data rate is set to 35 Mbit/s (max.) VBR. The purpose of Vegas Pro's proxy files is not to keep the data rate low but to offer best playback and editing performance.

Alright, thanks to both of you for extra info. I am gonna just edit on the source mp4 then.

I create proxy files using handbrake or ffmpeg---faster to create, and smaller, than the ones created by Vegas.

hmm, so.. if i manage to create such a file.. how do i convince VP16 to use it? just change the extension in the project directory.. ?

rraud wrote on 11/11/2018, 12:45 PM

I would use "View> Project Media> Replace". There was a third-party proxy utility for older versions of VP, I forget the name of it, but is probably does not work on later versions anyway.

Give the proxy files the same root name as the originals, but put them in a different folder. It's OK if they have a different file extension. Then highlight the original files in the Project Media window and choose Swap Video Files, then navigate to the folder where the proxies are. I think you can swap them back with the same command. You can also swap them back at render time, using Render Options > Swap Video Files on Render.

There's a bit more about proxies in point #9 of this post, but it doesn't cover the workflow I've just described, which is quite new.

Xmedia Recode is a front end GUI for ffmpeg, and would be another option for batch transcoding to proxies.

Thank you all very much for the valuable info !

dape wrote on 11/16/2018, 7:01 AM

Ok, so i am using xmedia recode right now to make (and then test) proxy files for my 1440p mp4 files. So i copied the three audio streams and i selected h.264 with nvenc and a 1280x720 biliniar filter for the video part.

I can convert into however bitrate i want the proxy file, right? I just have to keep the same length, right ?

Thanks again.

I doubt NEVC encoded video is a good choice to be used for editing on your system.

Why so? i converted a 2h30min 27 gb master 1440p file into a 1280x720 5 Mbit 5 gb file in like 50 minutes with NVENC from Xmedia Recode.

I got my NAS with 3 TB raid1 space ready for my workflow on my gigabit LAN.

Will i encounter problems or incompatibilies swapping video files or.. ?

Marco. wrote on 11/16/2018, 9:16 AM

Sorry, I mixed up HEVC with NVENC.

Yes. Be sure to match your project properties to the proxies while you are using them, then match them back to the original media when you're not.

Put the original files in one directory and the proxies---with the same file names---in a different directory.

Do all of your edits using the proxy files.

When you are ready to render, close Vegas, rename the proxy file directory and restart Vegas. It will prompt you for the location of the files & you select the original files. Double check your project settings are consistent with the original files (not the proxies) and render.

EDIT: D'oh! Just noticed Nick already explained this...I didn't know about the Swap Video Files option!!!

So basically i should have one more project prorperties preset along with the 1440p one. I should make a 720p project properties preset and when i am working with proxy files i should use that preset. And then after i swap the video files i should choose the 1440p preset and then render as usual.

Did i understand correct the workflow ?

Yes, but you don't need to save a project properties preset unless you want to. You're probably only changing the resolution.
