OpenType sure is nice, but it isn't a substitute for a working titler. I kinda like the drop-split pre-set. Whenever I use it, change the text a little bit etc, invariably it stops being a drop-and split and becomes more like a un-blur - drop - something.

As for "support for Dolby Digital Plus or TrueHD (i doubt THAT will ever happen... )'. First, how many other NLE's are supporting that right now, and second, something like that is a real double-edge sword. I could be wrong but I believe things like this require some kind of licensing which means the price tag will increase.... either that or serious restrictions added to avoid the licensing.

TrueHD is based on MLP, I think, and the one standalone encoder I've seen for that is ridiculously expensive.

I'd like to see Dolby Digital Plus, personally... it would seem the next logical step from offering standard AC-3. Some kind of DTS would also be nice, though probably unnecessary.

However, it is a good point that none of the other NLEs offer it at the moment; so why should SCS? Adobe's CS3 apps don't even offer 5.1 AC3 encoding without an additional $300 purchase for Minnetonka's encoder. The most it can do on its own is Stereo AC3 through Encore. Considering Vegas offers integrated 5.1 encoding for not a whole lot more than the $300 added charge ontop of the already more expensive PPro, I'd say SCS is doing a pretty decent job so far.

I'm happy but I've only been doing SD no HD.

I wish Vegas would intergrate a full acid version with VST support.
Full on movie, midi, audio digital workstation with GSIF support!
That would be the end all of my application as audio and video all in one super easy to use package.
Pluggin in Atmosphere or Stylus RMX or Gigastudio right into Vegas!!!!! AAAAH MAN! My mouth is watering : )

I'll stick with Vegas 7, just like I'll stay with Windows XP.

Neither of the 'upgrades' to these two products is worth the trouble you'll experience.

Wow. Version 7 must have been spectacular. I am totally loving 8.0b. Maybe it's from years of working with Avid/Pinnacle Liquid that anything is a step up.

"Wow. Version 7 must have been spectacular."

It's a fact. Version 7d is a hell of a workhorse for HDV. It's solid and dependable. Of course it doesn't have Pro titler or Smart render, but the thing is about as solid as one could ever wish for in the HDV department.

Of course I expect you have both the programs and have tried them for yourself right Gates.

Pile of utter rubbish on BOTH points.

Both programs have their pros/cons but overall, Vegas 8b is a good program. And Vista... I've run the 64 bit version for almost a years with no issues at all.

Myself, I gotta say, I'm happy with Vegas Pro 8.0b. I'm doing XDCAM HD work with it, and I find the XDCAM HD MXF support to be excellent. And the fact that it can smart render to all the XDCAM HD data rates, even the VBR ones, really speeds up rendering and maintains maximum quality for these projects.

It's not perfect, but no NLE is. I see people complaining about bugs and issues just as much in any of the other NLE forums I frequent.

And props to Sony for getting DVD Architect 5 out today, I'm looking forward to Blu-Ray authoring in the near future. This is an on-time launch, much better than most other NLE companies tend to have.

I used to work with other NLEs until a sound engineer buddy put me on to Vegas and I love it

I like the mind set and the creative ease. The other guys 7 in number that I work with still use FCP and Avid which is the industry norm [over here]
But I produce twice as much in the same period and more creative [not my words] and I put that down to Vegas

Also this forum has improved my workflow and editing skills noticeably [thank you very much all the locals]
I have a graphic design background and moved over to 3d animation only [avi] and then editing [all the other crap]
and now filming, that is the way the industry is moving to smaller one or two man opps
The big crews with specialists in every field is disappearing [over here anyway] so if you are an all rounder you are in business
So Sony Vegas gave me a massive advantage over other artists making the same move
