Is there a BUG in: automatic preview in Vegas 4

KPITRL wrote on 3/12/2003, 9:04 PM
Hi, I just recieved V4 today, and started to check out some of the new
features. And then I noticed that I could not auto-preview any stills
(jpeg), or any other for that matter. Even the stills that were on the
vision series sample cd. does not show up using automatc preview.

I looked through every setting that I could think of, but I can't seem
to find a solution. When I go back to VV3, everything works fine.
Also my quicktime images won't open in vegas4, I get a message saying
quicktime did not load properly, but I can still open them in VV3.

Any help on this matter will be appreciated.

Athlon 1.1 ghz, 512mg ram, Win-me,
40gb sys. drive, 60gb storage.
OHIC compliant 1394 capture.

Thanks in advance,

kpitrl

Vegas 4 ships with a new QuickTime plugin, which requires QuickTime 5.0.2 or later. You'll need to do a custom install of QuickTime, uninstall the QuickTime you currently have first (it's one of the choices for QuickTime in the Start | Programs menu). I recommend installing everything because the newer versions of QuickTime have a lot of interdependency among the components, just installing the authoring components is not sufficient. And yes, QuickTime should still work just fine for you in Vegas 3.0.

To preview TIF files, you definitely need QuickTime 5.0.2 or 6.0 installed, but you should have been able to preview your JPEG stills. Make sure you've enabled the auto preview button in the media explorer toolbar (it looks like an arrow with a small triangle in the lower right corner), otherwise nothing happens when you click on a stills media file.

SonicTSW, will the new version of quicktime also enable me to preview
jpegs, png's & so fourth?

("Make sure you've enabled the auto preview button in the media explorer toolbar")

Yes, I had the preview button enabled, I could auto-preview all video files just
fine, but only the stills I could not.

Also,Is there a new version of quicktime on the vegas installation cd?

Thanks,

KPITRL

Are you able to load jpegs and png files on the timeline?
KPITRL wrote on 3/13/2003, 9:54 AM
Yes, And as far as I can tell, they play fine,
it's just the auto-preview that seems to be out of whack.
I tried un-installing , and re-installing, only to get the
same results. Strange

Also, is Quicktime6 a free download?

Auto-preview is really a neat feature, that really speeds things along
when your searching for a certain still among many, I really need this
feature, Thanks,

KPITRL,

JPEG and PNG files (as well as PSD, DIB, and TARGA formats) are handled by the stills plugin (stl2plg) so you don't need QuickTime to read them. You'll need QuickTime to read TIF files and QuickTime movie files, etc.

Yes, QuickTime 6 is a free download. If you run the player, you'll get asked to upgrade to the Pro version but you can always click the Later button.

So, am I somehow missing this plug-in?

Why am I able to use those files, but
not able to auto-preview them?

The stange thing is, all of the values
pertaining to the still, is displayed
during the time the preview is supposed
to be in the window, and the size of the
window even changes to the size of the
still that i'm attemting to view, but
nothing is actually being displayed.

In some non-scientific testing, after turning on Auto Preview in the explorer window, I was able to preview any video clip and NO still image - no matter the format.
KPITRL wrote on 3/13/2003, 6:33 PM
Jetdv, are you using vegas4, also do you have VV3 in which this?
feature works just fine.

The test was in Vegas 4. The same test in Vegas 3 showed the pictures just fine. Seems ONLY related to stills.
RichR wrote on 3/13/2003, 10:00 PM
Just tested in V4 and had no problem with auto preview.
jetdv wrote on 3/13/2003, 10:20 PM
OK, just tested on two more computers with Vegas 4. The first computer DID NOT preview stills. However, it DID preview an animated GIF on that machine and video files previewed fine.

On the second computer, EVERYTHING previewed fine INCLUDING stills.

I didn't get the laptop out to check it.

(Yes, I own way too many copies - 4 to be precise)

THANKS GUYS, I LOADED VEGAS4 ON MY LAPTOP, AND AUTO-PREVIEW
WORKS FINE ON THAT ONE, SO NOW ITS JUST A LITTLE MORE CONFUSING.
IS THERE ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE HAVING THIS PROBLEM?

I WONDER IF (WINDOWS ME) COULD BE THE PROBLEM?
ANYONE OF YOU RUNNING WINDOWS ME?
UP TO THIS POINT I HAVEN'T HAD ANY TROUBLE WITH VEGAS
WHAT-SO-EVER.

ANY MORE HELP IS APPRECIATED,

Those of you who are experiencing problems:

1. What Windows OS are you running on?
2. Do you have QuickTime installed (or not)? If yes, what version (run the player and select About from the Help menu).

p.s. If you want to see which plugin is used to open a file, right click on the file in Vegas's explorer window and select Properties. The plugin filename along with a lot of other information is displayed.

One issue that I've not seem mentioned here, is that exceptionally high resolution stills take longer to load, and on some systems with less RAM, I've seen the preview time out before the image loads. I'm talking about images of greater than 2000 pixels in resolution. Don't know if that's your issue, but on several systems, I'm getting every file type previewing correctly. 'Course, I'm running XP on everything at this point. ME never made sense to me...too many networking hassles.

I'm running (Windows Me) on the problem system,
(which is my main editor),I did install ( Quicktime 6)
as suggested in an earlier thread.

On my laptop, which is a (Dell) 1.6ghz.P4,
running (XP pro), all is fine.

Hopefully (Win. Me) isn't the problem, I'm way too
busy to reformat, and search for drivers and all
that fun stuff, but on the other hand, if that is
the issue, atleast it's fixable :0), Right?

Thanks,

I had the misfortune to have windows me on one of my computers and ended up dumping the system and re installing windows 98se. Then xp came out and I switched to XP have had no problems since XP except registration problems.
I believe the only cure for Windows ME is suicide.

System #1 - does not work (an old machine not actually used for editing - just checking for answers running in demo mode)
1. Win2K SP2
2. 5.0.2
PIII 200MHz - 128 Meg RAM

System #2 - DOES work
1. Win2K SP2
2. 5.0.2
PIII 750MHz - 256 Meg RAM

System #3 - does not work
1. WinME
2. 5.0.2
HP Pavalion Athlon 800, 756 Meg RAM

Didn't check the XP laptop

hmmmm... there does seem to be one thing in common, in that automatic preview isn't working in ME (anyone with Win98SE also seeing this problem? they're both based on Win9x)

With the one exception that jetdv also sees the problem on a Win2K machine (which is very slow by today's standards, at 200 MHz). As the minimum system requirements are a 400 MHz machine, it could be happening because of image file load timeouts/system performance problems.

We will try to repro this on WinME.

I haven't noticed this before (I don't make much use of the auto-preview feature) but now that I check I find that I get the same thing - auto-preview doesn't work for stills (gifs, jpgs or tifs) in V4 on Win98SE here.

It tries to work - the aspect ratio of the preview window changes to a rectangle of the appropriate shape, but the image does not appear. Then after a couple of seconds it reverts to the aspect ratio of the project.

On the same machine, VV3.0c auto-preview for stills works perfectly - it changes the aspect ratio of the diplay window for a couple of seconds while it displays the preview image, and then reverts to the aspect ratio of the project again.

Something about auto-preview has definitely changed between VV3.0c and V4, at least as far as the way it works on Win98SE is concerned.

Only seems to affect still images though - autopreview of audio and video files still seems to work just fine.

Thanks to everyone who responded to this issue, also thanks to Sonic tsw,
and hopefully between all of us within the Vegas family, we can continue
to make this the #1 video editing software of all time.

So do I have to upgrade to XP?

SonyTSW wrote on 3/16/2003, 11:35 AM
KPITRL,

No, you shouldn't have to upgrade to XP.

We will try to reproduce this problem here. That way we can determine exactly why it isn't working and come up with a fix to be included in a V4 update.
