Grazie, I did not know that you could read japanese.

Neither did I! I picked it up in the last 5 minutes - easy really when you've tried to master BORIS Graf.

Looking for an English translation now.

Looks like 2 models available. This is very interesting by Canon. Kinda broken the "hold" on the XL2 to H1. What I really wanna see are the prices. "Where's the Beef??"

Bob's translation:

The scuttlebut was right, Sony are discontinuing the Z1/FX1 and Canon have bought the rights.

Love that Canon 'wart' they've added on the side :)

So it's a XL-H1 without the interchangeable glass.
Still get the genlock and HD-SDi out, excellent.
XLR audio in, excellent.

So when Grazie buy one?

Bob.

So, what IS the block set-up?
Grazie wrote on 7/26/2006, 6:01 AM
Canon bought the Prog licence? Is that in there?
apit34356 wrote on 7/26/2006, 6:04 AM
Grazie, goto "http://babelfish.yahoo.com/" and put in your link.
Jay Gladwell wrote on 7/26/2006, 6:05 AM

So, what IS the block set-up?

I don't see that. Where are you reading?

Grazie wrote on 7/26/2006, 6:05 AM
Bob? What IS the block type/size?

Next question? MONEY?!?? Where you think they are gonna place this?
Jay Gladwell wrote on 7/26/2006, 6:07 AM

It's using the same technology as the XL H1 "24F" -- the end result is a "progressive frame", but not in the purest sense of the word.

farss wrote on 7/26/2006, 6:10 AM
It's 3CCD, no surprises there.

The price?

Don't know but it'd have to a lot cheaper than the XL-H1.
Why, well this will be a servo lens for sure.
Can't change glass.

Yet it has all the expensive bits from the XL-H1, might make it hard to keep the price down which might beg the question of why build it?

If it's only say 20-30% cheaper than the XL-H1 who wouldn't buy the XL-H1.

All just my speculation.

Bob.

Farss, Have you been told about the new proconsumer line? or did you just trick me?
Jay Gladwell wrote on 7/26/2006, 6:11 AM

I'd guess around the $4,000 ballpark.

Grazie wrote on 7/26/2006, 6:14 AM
Bob there is loadsa space below the XL-H1. And IF the Z and F are vanishing there will be a gap? So I guess all these will be priced ABOVE the XL2.
Grazie wrote on 7/26/2006, 6:25 AM

Certainly LOOKS the biz!
Jay Gladwell wrote on 7/26/2006, 6:33 AM

"The XH A1... will ship in October and November 2006 and will sell for USD $4,000..."

I wasn't too far off.

. .and B and H have the XL2 at 4,449.95 . . interesting positioning.
Spot|DSE wrote on 7/26/2006, 6:39 AM
Good heavens, Grazie! been on caffeine today? ;-)

Sony hasn't discontinued the Z1, Canon announced a product a little earlier than normal to compliment/replace the GL series, and the US office of Canon isn't allowing folks to talk about the camcorders here, tho I'm sure a lot will leak between now and IBC.
farss wrote on 7/26/2006, 6:42 AM
Just a good old Aussie joke.

I probably know less hard facts about these things than anybody here, well apart from what anyone can find by reading lots of posts on fora.

Canon are always very secretive, so much so that at NAB I was able to ask Canon simple questions that none of them could answer. So mostly even Canon don't know what they're building.

But now I'm being serious. Sorry to repeat this but I still wonder wonder why Canon have released this camera.

It's going to be in the same marketplace as the Z1/FX1 but they've got a lot of pro features that broadcaster would want like genlock, HD-SDI etc. These have to keep the cost up. But a broadcaster will think hey, for a bit more I get interchangeable glass, that's what we'll buy. You and me might find an extra $3K or even $5K a lot of dollars but buy a camera for OB work and that's pocket change compared to a HD-SDI mixer etc.

Now take a good soul like Grazie.

Apart from it being a Canon, what's he get. Well the HD-SDI, genlock etc, pretty much useless to him. But still no manual lens and no way to change the lens. To get that he's still going to have to pony up for the XL-H1.
And then there's the guy who just buys cameras to look at. Heck why not buy the Z1.

Just my 'umble opinion but I was kind of hoping for a XL-H1 minus all the bits non broadcasters don't need. Get the price down, even sell it at cost and make the money on the lenses. Give guys like Grazie what they want and don't make them pay for what they don't want.

Sorry if I'm speaking on Grazies behalf, think he'll forgive me :)

Bob.
farss wrote on 7/26/2006, 6:55 AM
OK,
Take it all back, well almost!

The XH A1 drops the HD-SDI etc block and a lot of the cost.
I like it already.
The XH G1 adds a few things that the XL-H1 missed out on, embedded audio and T/C in the HD-SD! stream.

One other VERY nice addition.

User modified for 50Hz operation, no idea of cost as yet.

Bob.
