Issue with hardcoded subtitles' pixelation on Vegas pro 13

judelaw wrote on 12/23/2018, 12:12 AM

Good morning everyone !

I'm hard-coding my subtitles, as usual, but I'm having an issue with subtitles, it's not smooth on my recently built video computer. Subs have pixelation. When I use the same font on my old computer, with the exact same vegas project, I don't have that issue. I have vegas 13 on both computers.

I usually import my subtitles into Vegas from a Word .doc file. But I don't have Word installed on my video computer so I import from a .rtf file instead.

Could that be the issue ? Because everything seems to be the same regarding settings on both computers. Could it be a codec issue ? I think not because the problem concerns both timeline and the rendered video.

Thanks if you can help.

Which media generator are you using in Vegas? Titles & Text? (Legacy) Text? And which font?

Check that the "Frame Size" figures at the top of the media generator window match your project resolution.

It's called "(Legacy) Text"
Font : "Book Antiqua" , size 24 , bold.
White text color with black background color.

At the top ? The frame Size figure in each subtitle's project's properties doesn't match the project resolution (720x480 vs 1280x720), but there is no match either on the computer where it works. And matching the values (1280x720 for both project properties and sub Frame Size) on the computer where it doesn't work doesn't solve the issue.

Sorry, forgot to say hi. Hi Nick !

How exactly are you importing text from the .rtf file?

Does it look OK if you just type the text in manually instead?

I did a test with Book Antiqua (ttf) 24pt bold text in a 1280x720 project. It doesn't get pixellated but the text is more blurry if the frame size of the legacy text generator is set to 720x480.

If I save an .rtf document containing Book Antiqua 24pt bold text then copy and paste that text into the legacy text generator, it looks OK and shows the correct settings in the legacy window, but it shows a completely different font in the video preview. So if that's what you are doing, I suggest you set the font from within the legacy text window.

Well I just tried all that in details, and it doesn't work.
Usually I would first set the font at first in the .doc document. But I tried typing it after, I still get pixelation.

Could you post a full-resolution screenshot of the problem?

judelaw wrote on 12/23/2018, 5:21 AM

It may look like nothing but it's pretty disgusting on the video.
Edit : Actually you see the difference if you click on each one.

Both are taken with Windows 7 built in screenshot tool. For each one the Vegas preview windows was 1280x720x32 @best full (I don't know what the 32 stands for).

I also tried to create a new one without copying anything with the "Sony Titles & text" instead of "(Legacy) text" but I can't because "Sony Titles & text" outline doesn't even have a "feather" option like "(Legacy) text" has. It wouldn't look the same. It has to.

Edit : I also tried windows settings, it didn't change anything either.

This is what I see in VP13 with Scale video to fit preview window turned off and Best (full) preview quality:

The font file I used is Book Antiqua Bold.ttf (147kb).

Are you using feathering on this text? If so, why, and what exact settings?

judelaw wrote on 12/23/2018, 1:29 PM

It looks smooth !
I don't think it's a problem of font because I tried with other fonts and couldn't get one to display smoothly.
Yes I'm using feathering in the "Draw outline" section. It is set at 0.100. There is also an indication of width that is set at 0.146. The shadow section is unchecked.

These are settings I chose one day, just because it looked nice. I've been using them for a few years now, it has become my hallmark.

I managed to render the video using my old computer. But it's kind of a hassle and I'm afraid one day it might not work as well as today. I have to find a solution. I've been looking for explanations for about a month, I can't find anything.

I can't live without it, it's what makes my video work look like real professional video work☺️.

Edit : That and obviously your precious teachings witch I keep as a word file, and as a sticky note too.

Uncheck the "Draw Outline" option to see if it resolves.

In the top right of the "Draw Outline" section, if you click the coloured rectangle, what are the values for R, G, B & A?

Does Preferences > Video > GPU acceleration of video processing make a difference?

Are you sure you're previewing at Best (full) quality?

Can you share a small V13 project file on a cloud service, containing some sample legacy text events?
