iZotope plugins continuously crash Vegas Pro 18

Shimager wrote on 3/27/2021, 7:21 PM

Hi,

I recently bought a new Windows 10 computer as Vegas Pro 18 was continuously crashing and my old i7-2600 would not mind replacement with a fast rendering i9-10850K. So far so good. But then I found out that Vegas is still crashing continuously! OK, my current graphics card is a bit weak as the current Radeon RX550 was the only affordable card at the moment (waiting for great GeForce video card prices to go down as there are extremely high now), but this does not seem to be the issue. I boiled things down to the audio tracks with iZotope plugins which make the entire setup extremely unstable. Just opening an fx line where an iZotope plugin is hosted, is usually enough to crash Vegas Pro 18 completely. I have a whole bunch of iZotope plugins, but using a Neoverb, a visual mixer and certainly also the Ozone imager is certainly enough to crash Vegas. The Ozone imager makes things very unstable. Is that taking high use of the graphics card with that great image viewing? What can be going on here? Is Vegas not compatible with iZotope plugins? It is Magix who made me aware about iZotope plugins in the first place, so I would expect this to have been tested thoroughly.... Fact is that I do not see options to complete my current projects if this instability goes on and my Vegas crashed every minute... Pease help!

By the way I already looked into various suggestions like VEGAS Pro 18.0 Crashing During Normal Use at https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-18-0-crashing-during-normal-use--123666 , but so far nothing helps. Using my GPU acceleration still seems to be best for speed on my 1080p / 50Hz project with 3 main video tracks and 7 main audio tracks for mixing.... Or is this getting to the limits for what Vegas can decently handle? Sorry to start doubting Vegas now. It has been my good companion for many stable years (then not yet using iZotope).

Hope anyone has some good experience with all these plugins and perhaps some good suggestions!

Kind regards, Shimager

What exactly are these plugins?
VST3? Vegas pro 18 can't handle them.
I'm facing the same dilemma - I bought Izotope RX8 - but you can process these VST3 plugins with Soundforge pro.

I can not confirm. I bought izotope from Humble some time ago.
Seems to be 64bit FX, but no crashes, see screenshots...

Install the VST-2 version of Ozone-9.

Yes, also on my machine it was initially working although not smooth. Therefore I checked the recommended movie on settings to improve performance. I now still can open an interface, but it is a matter of seconds, irrespective which IZotope plugin, and it crashes! Even freezes up the entire machine once in a while during a crash. Otherwise the new machine works great including Sound Forge, Acid and other the Vegas Prop 18 own plugins.... So strange... I will start looking to other plugin brands now as I cannot get it stable....

rraud, I guess those are the normal vst's which option we see passing buy during install right? Those are installed indeed. Initially, with an earlier install, I left those out as I assumed only vst3 was required... Then I did not see any plugin and I found out that Vegas is only showing the 'normal' vst plugins and the vst3 is not even displayed in the list with available audio plugins...

Shimager wrote on 3/28/2021, 3:08 PM

My concern is now that I can flush all iZotope plugins into the sewer (Nectar 3 elements, Neoverb, Neutron 3 Advanced, Ozone 7, Ozone 9 Elements, Ozone Imager, Ozone Imager 2, Relay, RX 8 Elements, Tonal Balance Control 2, Vinyl, Visual Mixer...). That's a costly effect... Anyone experience with Fabfilter from within Vegas Pro? Or does Vegas Pro 18 struggle with those as well?

Shimager wrote on 3/28/2021, 3:26 PM

Install the VST-2 version of Ozone-9.

Now this is strange.... I checked my disk on the vst location of all such files and now I see, when searching for "*.vst" that all files that appear show a ".vst3" extension... How can? Where did the normal vst's now go? I am puzzled. At the same time this gives new hope. And why would vst3 show in my available audio plugins when those were not showing up before (when I omitted to install the old vst's)?

Shimager wrote on 3/28/2021, 3:40 PM

OK, further news: just installed Fabfilter. Pointed Vegas to the vst directory (not vst 3) ... Same effect: Vegas can open the plugin but then just crashes.... I am lost. Both brands not working, so there must be something odd in Vegas Pro 18. I already tried to reinstall... No single difference. Where to look next?

@Shimager
Here are the VST2 plug-ins from Izotope: (at least they can be loaded into Vegas Pro 18)

Here is also my list of iZotope plugins inside Vegas 18. I use them all the time, especially De-Click and Voice Denoiser.

I can apply De-Click and Denoiser at the event level no problems even if I have 40-50 events in my timeline. However, there is a serious performance issue if I use too many instances of Neutron. A few instances at the event level is ok but as I add more and more, Vegas becomes sluggish at a point where it is unworkable. I have to use Neutron at the track level.

@Shimager, how is your iZotope activated on your PC? Here is how mine are through iZotope Product Portal, my iZotope products are activated to the computer itself, NOT through an iLok dongle.

@walter-i. Ah, OK! Indeed I was looking for *.vst, but the old ones are still like *.dll.... Of course!, those are the old formats 😊 I do have those indeed positioned correctly. Thanks for pointing out. That solves part of my confusion :-)

Hi @Illusion, so they do tend to become sluggish at some point, even with a fast computer? I noticed that on my machine the system becomes sluggish (or rather collapses inm my case) even without making any proper resource use. Processor goes hardly up, perhaps 5% or so before Vegas crashes. I guess each plugin should use a seperate core, but that is not noticable at all. Only during rendering the whole thing picks up fast without crash and all cores in use. So strange... Why crashing during real time view and staying during render action?

@Illusion Thanks again for checking and trying to help out! Mine are installed in the same way...

OK, update 😄  After reading the above, I found an option to reset Vegas with Control-Shift start.... No effect, still crashing! So I was looking further: The videocard was updated a few days ago with latest software, so I did not expect anything from there. Then I realised that the plugins were not crashing during rendering, only during display... So I went looking again inside the Radeon Software tool and I did find a new set of software! During the install I selected a (I now think crucial) option, to reset all software settings for the video card!

And taataataataaaaaa, hoera, all stable now!

So apparently there was some item with the highly visual plugins that was crashing the application and sometimes even the whole PC! Celebration! I hope other people will be helped by this too: reset the video card to base settings, no game modes or whatever, just default worked for me. And thanks for the earlier responders for keeping heads up. That was feeling like help is close by and helped me not to get depressed too much 😅

Have a good further day

Thank you for updating the report! I'm sure this is helpful for other users. I'll tag the above reply as solution as well.
