Which codec is inside the .mov wrapper? The GY-HM170 can use either H.264 or AVCHD.

In this case H264

That is a guess as there is only a suffix .mov and the selection in System is .mov or AVCHD. A check in the camera manual gives no additional info. Also; in Vegas 12 there is no preset for UHD so must I upgrade to 13 to be able to edit UHD?

Don't guess. Download Mediainfo and see exactly what's included in the MOV wrapper. (Uncheck and don't install any associated crapware). It will tell you more than you ever wanted to know about the media.

Vegas Pro 12 can edit 4K to some extent, but Vegas Pro 13 has the 4K render templates that you need.

Thanks, analysis shows:
MPEG4 (quicktime) 1 video stream AVC 1 audio stream PCM overall bit rate 47.8 Mbps

This is HD 1920x1080 60i it plays in VLC Media Player but not in MS Media player

In Vegas Pro 12 just a blank green screen no image or sound. Same in Vegas Studio 13.

Is anyone editing .mov files from the new JVC cameras or is this file format specific to FCPX only? Odd decision by a camera maker.

thanks

You do have Quicktime loaded?

Post a few second camera clip and I'll have a go at it.

nedc, I ran into a similar issue with my JVC-HM750. It records in either mp4 or mov but the mov files can't be read natively in Vegas.
The only fix I found that worked was to download and run a file called File Converter - XDCAM .MOV to .MXF (PC).
It's on the Convergent Design site about 1/2 way down the page.
https://convergent-design.com/nanoflash-downloads.html
Once I did that I could read the mov files.
Good luck.

I have the latest version of QT loaded, How do I attache a ffile?
ned-cordery wrote on 8/27/2015, 12:52 PM
Thanks, I contacted JVC whose one line reply is that "Videographers use Premiere or Avid". So it would seem that editing has not been one of their concerns. If transcoded is the bit rate maintained?

Thanks

ned, it was a few years ago that I did that so I have no idea what happened with the transcoding other than it worked.

More news from JVC; apparently Edius 8 works natively with the .mov files.. The specification of the JVC 4K cameras i so attractive that i have to go to Edius. Any more suggestions?

Keep in mind that the grass is not always greener on the other side. Download a trial of Edius and play with it to see if it fits your needs as an editor. Good luck with whatever decision you make.

"How do I attach a file?"

You upload the file to a cloud storage site like dropbox.com, share it and post the link here using directions describe here.

First; thanks for the help, greatly appreciated.

Here is the latest; if I shoot UHD the files load into and play perfectly in Vegas Pro 12, i checked the Properties and the files are UHD on the timeline;

1920x1080 HD - will not play. Since I have a 4K camera I will use it in 4K mode so an upgrade to v13 and I should be able to proceed. I have other HD cameras so can meet all needs or down res from 4K. Thanks for your offer John but I now have a working system.

Thanks again, nedc.
