low graphic shapes border/lines resolution with cookie cutter etc.

Mindmatter wrote on 4/18/2023, 12:20 PM

Hi all

I'm running into this time and time again - I create solid color shapes or borders with tools like the cookie cutter, and they look extremely jagged / aliased. Pic 1 is a screenshot from a 4k project with circles done with the cookie cutter. They look terrible. The size doesn't change the issue.

Pic 2 is a circle downloaded from the internet. Look how smooth the border is.

What am I missing here? How can i get smoother lines and better definition?

Thanks!

Bezier Masking has circular masking tool that gets better quality.

Use a graphics editor for graphics work. I use Photoshop.

@Mindmatter I'd be interested to know too,

This is Vegas + Cookie cutter

This is a similar thing created in Gimp, no aliasing.

Loaded into Vegas it has no aliasing, even zoomed in there's very little.

@john_dennis Hi, that's a bit of a cop out tho, 😁 Like in my pics above I'd use GIMP for this, but the question is why does Vegas Cookie alias it?

thank you all!

m3lquixd's solution is actually pretty cool.
@john_dennis I tried PS, strangely it didn't give me very smooth lines either. At a closer look at your examples, you can see the typical nipples at the bottom center of the circles.

@john_dennis Yeah sorry I've got agree with @Mindmatter, that pic does have 'nipples' 🤭 on the edges,

Tis is GIMP. version of your pic

In Vegas

& exported from Vegas using the Save to Snapshot.

This is GIMP Image properties

@john_dennis Hi, It was this picture you posted above I was ref to. The video you just posted of a different image does look a lot better 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

PS your video ones have feathered edges, that helps reduce aliasing.

This is the image you did 'Save to Snapshot' from Vegas , see the dark ring on the edge that the feathering caused,

I imported my image & did 'Save to Snapshot'from Vegas, see the dark ring on the edge that the feathering caused.

Vegas, since it implemented the zoom in the preview, made the elements more rigid, in the past they were more feathering. About creating shapes in software like photoshop, the pixelated edges will depend on the resolution of this "shape" that was made in Photoshop and the like.

@m3lquixd If he used this image in his video instead of the one with feathered edges you would def see the aliasing,

The image I used above was UHD 3840x2160 just like his, I shared the properties that were 300ppi,

but I recreated it with a UHD 3840x2160 but just 72ppi

72ppi In Vegas

Saved to Snapshot from Vegas back in GIMP, .a few dark pixels on the not feathered one but almost exactly the same result as before, black edge on the feathered one,
