Mask effect doesn't work :'(

Hello to all,
A few years ago, I made many montages on the sony vegas pro 13 software.
Recently, I acquired the vegas pro 16 software, which is very similar to its predecessor. I was able to apply effects, transitions etc. without any problems.
However, I cannot apply the mask effect. When I try to hijack an image, nothing happens. So I wanted to know if someone could help me to determine the source of this problem, and eventually, to correct it.
For the example, I took a completely random picture, but the problem persists on all formats. I have already restarted the software several times and tried again by opening new files, to no avail.

Looks like I'm really dumb. I pressed everybuttons, but didn't see this one... Thanks so much ! I'll leave the topic open, in case of somebody is as blind as I :))
