Keyframe the pan/crop on your text event to zoom all the way in to one of the letters - the middle arm of the E for example.

It just goes black.

Kinvermark wrote on 8/8/2017, 12:53 PM

Extend the text event - it's your alpha, so when it ends the underlying track is blocked. There are probably a few other ways to do this, but I don't have time to dig into it at the moment.

The text is Multiply Mask, thats the only way to get it to show the video behind the text. I am at a loss here, as I can not figure it out.

Just did a quick test. It works. So make sure your text and video events are the same length. I used legacy text, impact typeface, pure white, no background, set track to multiply mask. Then use pan/crop keyframe to zoom in to the text. You already have the video showing through the text so it looks like you have it set up properly. Just zoom in to any part of a letter where the video shows.

I tried to zoom in on the T see video, I still can't get it to work.

Okay I tied a new font like you use Impact and I can no get the video to show in the background but then it goes black. How to I keep the video going without the text event ending and going black? How do I keep viewing the back video?

TheHappyFriar wrote on 8/8/2017, 7:30 PM

in the latest video you posted you missed the letter.

In the pan/crop window make sure the center dot in the pan/crop preview is in the letter you want to zoom in on.

I changed the font to impact and was able to get the effect to work with a larger font. But now after you see the video in the back it goes black when the text event is over. How do I keep the back video playing?

Here is the effect that works but it won't stay on the back video:

The text track is acting as your mask, so when it ends the track underneath it will go black. So, either drag the text event for the entire length, or better yet, split the video event (or transition to other evets) and put it (them) on a track above the text track (so isn't being composited to the text mask). Make sense?

Sorry for being a pain on the butt, but when the event is over no other video will play on any tracks below the 2 tracks already. See:

I figured it out, I made the effect 10 seconds long the video is 30 seconds. I split the video track at 10 seconds and rendered the 10 sec video and then added the spliced video to the track after changing it back to source alpha. And it worked, here is the effect:

Nice! - I have two feedback points.

1] Technical: I see jaggies on your font slopes. Now this may be as a result not of your making?

2] Videography: (These are meant as assists, and not negative criticisms) As the viewer - me - the ZOOM of the Text distracts from the beauty of the scene. One is serene and smoothly gliding - the ship against the setting Sun - and then the "action" sequence of the Text. The two vectors don't add to each other but add distraction for and from each other. I'm expecting an A-Team-like sequence and Hawaii50 music thumping away.

Suggestion: Keep the Text motionless WHILST the ship "slides and glides" through the Text. This way you accomplish far more: You gain narrative - a Smooth and enjoyable Vacation intro.

That's because the zooming is done with the pan/crop tool. When you use the Scale in the Title & Text tool instead, no jaggies appear on font slopes. (Besides the scale slider range of 0,1 till 10,0, you can type in also other values like 30,0)

I have to disagree with you on using just the text, I made another one here and I think it looks good.

That looks gorgeous. Maybe fade/dissolve the Text away as it gets larger? Again, the hard lines of the Text detract from the next "experience" by fighting for my attention.

That last one is great stuff ron-p. Just one suggestion -

Currently the visual metaphor is of a text cutout moving towards and out the back of a fixed camera focused on the hero shot of the beach. This doesn't work particularly well for me, particularly as the mask has no 3 dimensional substance. I would be more comfortable with the visual metaphor of a fixed mask with the camera moving in and passing through it before settling on the final fixed viewpoint on the hero beach video. This would involve the beach video growing at about the same rate as the text (or slightly faster or slower for a 2.5D effect) and maybe experimenting with a semi-transparent mask.

Whatever you do it looks like you have some great footage.

Oh yes!

Also, VF, I appreciate your explanation of the development of narrative through the vectors of graphics and the tools we have "to hand" with Vegas Pro.

I am not sure how to do that, I tried a cross-fade to fade like Grazie suggested to dissolve the mask, but I am not sure how to do what you are saying. See:

Try Using track motion on the background scene: have the motion zoomed in and you pull out to normal full screen about the same time the pan/crop is done.

I tired pan in earlier tonight would that not produce the same effect?

Now THAT is spectacular! There's still some tightening-up to do, but for my money, you're almost there.

Now, the biggie: the look of all that BLACK, just isn't "saying" VACATION. You have yet a further opportunity to finesse the Intro look with something more sympathetic and reflective of holiday. Maybe a granular sand backdrop or deep Bokeh of lights or any Vacation-y reference? But of course the whole sequence could have the sound of lapping waves, mixed with the cries of people enjoying themselves, seagulls coming-up from a short sequence Black - your World's Yer Lobster!

I really enjoy 😊 doing this stuff. Thanks for the opportunity.
