Motion Tracking?

Reyfox wrote on 5/22/2018, 5:02 PM

I know you can keyframe and track, but other software have the ability to motion track text, images, etc to an object.

Also, with the LUT feature, it would be nice to be able to click on the entire library and see the changes to the video. At least for me.

You can add tracking for free by integrating Hitfilm Express in your projects. Or do it in Resolve and export an intermediate file. Also Free.

Reyfox wrote on 5/23/2018, 3:22 AM

@Kinvermark, yes Resolve is free. But then, that begs to ask, why not do all the editing there also since you have to learn Resolve... and it's free?

I do have Hitfilm Express, would I have to also do it outside of Vegas, which is something I'd rather not do.

Vegas should have motion tracking integrated. Every other editor, from consumer (Pinnacle, VideoStudio Pro, etc) to "pro" editors has it as part of their program where you don't have to go outside of the program to do it. A feature request?

As for the LUT filter... it needs work (at least to me) in it's implementation. To find the right LUT, you have to already know which one you want to use. If you have a couple, it's not big deal. But if you have several, loading and looking at each one individually is time consuming. Here again, Resolve has it to easily see the changes each LUT will bring to the footage.

I am not in the least advocating Resolve. Just the way it's implemented makes things so much easier. I would love to see something like this in Vegas.

+1 for Mocha (Pro OFX).

Mocha and other Boris FX products are sometimes on special (e.g. Black Friday) so it might be worth keeping an eye out for any special offers if its on the wish list. There were some good offers from Boris FX recently, but they ended a few weeks ago as I recall.

More reason to disregard vegas. mocha costs $50 for hitfilm express & free for adobe premiere.

Very true, but the Mocha version included in HitFilm is a cut-down version of Mocha which, nonetheless, is really good for tracking.

The Mocha version which fr0sty is referring to (given the price points given) would have to be the full Mocha Pro OFX version, which works in not only Vegas Pro but also in HitFilm and DaVinci Resolve. The Remove module in Mocha Pro is truly amazing.

Yes that's true, but also unfortunate. There's no cheap route to mocha with vegas and really there should be, considering there's no cheap tracker for Vegas. The Borix FX suite that includes the tracker is very expensive. A basic mocha version for vegas would be ideal but Magix don't want to pay for the licence.

Reyfox wrote on 5/23/2018, 5:26 AM

Of course someone can buy something as an addon. But with so many editing software out there that include, at least a basic version of some type of motion tracking, why can't Vegas Pro? If you want a more "professional" one, buying a plugin is what everyone should do. I am sure people would pay $50 for a Mocha Basic plugin for Vegas with the option of going to the professional version if their needs expand to that.

Magix own Pro X has it..at least a basic version included with the software.

@Kinvermark, yes Resolve is free. But then, that begs to ask, why not do all the editing there also since you have to learn Resolve... and it's free?

Tracking has traditionally been a feature of motion graphics programs like after effects, Fusion, Nuke, etc. It has been rare to see it in NLE's up until now. Resolve has it because of its history as a color grading suite and needed it for grading masks/windows.

Resolve does lots of things Vegas does not; and vice versa. Does not make one better than the other; just different.

Anyway, I provided TWO FREE ways to do this, so unless you are motion tracking hundreds of clips on a regular basis I don't understand your complaint.

@Former user

More reason to disregard vegas. mocha costs $50 for hitfilm express & free for adobe premiere.

Sorry, but this is illogical Vegas bashing. Vegas is primarily an NLE, and a very good one at that. Complaining that it doesn't include features that are of marginal value for most users doesn't make sense. As I said, if you need basic motion tracking you can get it for free anyway. Mocha may be free for Premiere users, but Adobe's exorbitant rental fee more than balances that.

Ah, thanks for that! I really didn’t know that, and now makes tons of logic. Can I purchase MOCHA Pro with a perpetual licence like VP? So, left and right hand feeding each other. Interesting.

fr0sty wrote on 5/23/2018, 12:24 PM

I personally don't find $200/year for Mocha to be too expensive, especially when that cost comes with the latest version every time.... though I'm not one to buy software and keep using it years after new versions have come out either.

If you bought the Vegas 14 suite, it came with a stripped down version of mocha (the one bundled in BCC).

I'm sure a motion tracking option is something they are looking into bundling into future versions, but they are doing the right thing focusing on making Vegas work like it is first before they go off trying to put a bunch of new stuff under the hood. Let's get what we have working first before we start demanding new features.

Reyfox wrote on 5/23/2018, 1:43 PM

I agree @fr0sty, fix the things that hinder editing. Reading through the forum, there seems to be enough for them to work on. Stability should be #1.

@Kinvermark, motion tracking in it's basic form (say text following an object) is prevalent in a lot of software now. Most consumer editors (I named them before) have had it for at least 2 years already. And yes, while you can do it for free with other software, I would rather not. I would rather do everything within on piece of software if at all possible, preferring Vegas, including me saying have a "basic" version as a paid plugin. That's all. My "complaint" is not that, so please don't say what I did not and misrepresent my words. I said and I quote "A feature request?" I am not allowed to make those? Not allowed to say how I feel in a respectful manner?

mjry wrote on 5/23/2018, 5:15 PM

Definitely, I am sharing the @Reyfox opinion and feature request. The ability of basic tracking is a must have for professional NLE at that price today. But the list of bugs let is fixed first, I can do tracking externally for a while. Peace :)

I'm using Mocha being part of my Hitfilm OFX (Vegas) version. This integration works surprisingly well, and unties me from any non-proliferation software-bundling exercise, but, as noted, you may still have to upgrade each at each other's upgrade cycle to continue compatibility..(that was my issue with the last VP14/15 -> Hitfilm / Ignite progression debacle..).

Ditto to this! I’d love to see motion tracking added as a feature to VEGAS Pro. I could see so many potential uses for it. If you, Rey, hadn’t requested it I sure would have. +100 to this!

@MH7, not sure where specifically to place this request, but yes, I would love this feature in the next release. Keyframing works to a point..... it can be very time consuming to achieve the results that consumer editors (Pinnacle Studio, VideoStudio Pro, PowerDirector) do automatically for you. Again, it's "basic" motion tracking, but it saves you lots of time.

Well, I’m no expert of this forum yet, but if I had to hazard a guess I’d say you posted it in the correct place. Hmm...that might be enough to convince me to upgrade to the next version if it was added and implemented quite well.

Yeah, I’ve tried manual motion tracking with key framing, like you, and it is quite fiddly and time consuming. Going off the implementations I’ve seen in Premiere Pro, Hitfilm, and Resolve I think it’s done way better than any human can do it. It’s just so precise and awesome.
