moved to Win64 - should i do the same with Vegas?

I finally upgraded my 6 year old editing system. I now have:

-Hex Core Intel XEON GPU @ 2.60 Ghz (with avail socket for a second)
-24GB of RAM
-16 TB media disk space
-1 TB system disk
-Nvidia GeForce 560 Graphics card

Should I use Vegas 64 bit? I tried it back when I had Windows 64-bit pro, but found it buggy and missing a lot of features. I am still using Vegas 8, should I consider Vegas 10, 64 bit? Does it access more of my horsepower? I heard it was missing some codecs and such...

Many people, including myself, have gotten good results with Windows 7 64 bit and Vegas Pro 9.0e and 10.0d 64 bit. You certainly have enough memory to benefit from a 64 bit OS, though the benefit is likely to come from running more tasks (renders, etc) at once. Way back when I moved to 64 bit for both, I remember getting a slight but measurable render speed increase with MPEG-2.

One caveat: If you have a lot of plug-ins, some of them may be 32 bit and will require you load the 32 bit versions of Vegas Pro. No big deal as the different versions of Vegas coexist well on the same system.

A big "yes" for Windows 7 64 bit if nothing else.

I would say that since you can install Vegas 32 bit and Vegas 64 bit on the same computer, and since the project file can be opened in either, then you should run Vegas 64 bit.

If you find a problem relating to the 64 bit version you can always save the project then fire up the 32 bit version and get past that point.

64bit vegas on 64bit core i7 x980 with windows 7 pro here. No problems.

well, I downloaded the trial, and it installs, then when I click on it it shows the Windows "thinking" circle, then nothing ever comes up.

Strange. I uninstalled and reinstalled, but nothing. No registration screen, no windows, nothing. The 32 bit version works fine.

I have the SpiceMaster package as well, I have contacted them.

My main question is what are the advantages of the 64 bit Vegas. I am planning on working in HD from DSLR cameras, will the 64 bit version allow me to use more RAM for a preview?

In my view it is the extra RAM you can utilise. That leads to greater stability and speed when virtual RAM would otherwise be used.

Why stabiliy? Dunno, but loading the timeline with hundreds of large still images or other complexities is a recipe for disaster in several video editing programs that I have used.
