mp3 files don't work

BenJAMIN40 wrote on 5/10/2020, 9:46 PM

I use Vegas Pro 16.0. I've been importing mp3 files and editing with them for over a year. Out of the blue, mp3 files no longer work. When I drag them to the timeline, it doesn't show any waveforms and doesn't play any audio. Some mp3 files have a screeching noise at the beginning followed by silence. How do I get Vegas back to editing with mp3s?

Thanks for the reply. However, this did not fix the issue. I used to be able to import the MP3 into Vegas even though they wouldn't play properly. But after resetting Vegas, I can't even import them.

Someting as you write never comes out of the blue.
Something has been changed,

I decided to reinstall my Vegas and it that fixed the MP3 problem.

Finding lots of "re-encode" or "re-install vp" recommendations for this problem on the net

Before doing those, try cleaning out the VP cache folder. This made an mp3 that I'd used successfully in a dozen videos go from a screeching mess back to music

    • Make sure your cache folder is clean by deleting everything in  C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\<version #> (delete everything with VP closed and use task manager to make sure it's really gone from memory). The initial startup will be kind of long after this cleaning but once it's up, restart VP again. Use task manager to make sure VP is completely gone from memory before starting it back up.

I was mystified by a few very small projects, using video clips plus added in mp3 files. I had saved as vp18, latest build, with no issues, audio played fine, output files were created a few days ago.

I decided to tidy up the folder structure for these mini projects, they were originally without much structure.

I then had to get vp to locate the files in their new locations, and saved the project files.

I then got the mp3 screeching thing that other users experienced. I saved, copied and pasted from vp18 to an empty vp17 to fix this.

It struck me that maybe it might have something to do with the on disc folder structure, but on doing a quick test, putting the audio files into sub folders, loading into vp18 and saving as vp18 project I could maybe recreate the issue, but no luck, they played fine.

So its not the mp3's, because, the same mp3's that are screeching in some vp18 projects are ok in other vp18 projects.

@set Yes. The same mp3's are in one project with no issues and in other projects with the issue, all projects vp18 latest b434. The projects that have the issues didn’t have any issue until I did restructuring of their folder layout, and got vp to reacquire the files, and thus saved the projects again to a new project file name file.

@set Heres a good example. Last night I saved a simple project, 1 video file and several mp3 files. Saved and played aok.

This morning I checked it and everything fine. I then made changes to the video and audio locations. When the VP project launched and prompted for missing files I elected to choose "Specify a new location or replacement file" Once the project was loaded it was now with audio screeching.

My folder layouts simply had a hypen inserted to change and test, see screenshots below.

Maybe pass this on to the Developers?

Before folder renaming, audio plays aok.

After folder renaming, audio plays badly.

Some more solution suggestions in this thread by Sejima.

I'd like to add to my above post. I now find that the problem goes away once I re-save the project, close VP and now open that project again. It only disappears on re-launch of VP, with the newly saved and corrected file locations.

I tried the fix suggested by @sejima and @michael-harrison but it didn’t prevent the screeching mp3's.

So, in my case, its only a problem for a short while, until I save, close and then re-open VP, then it’s gone.
