MP4 File Encoded in Vegas: How to watch?

jrazz wrote on 2/13/2008, 3:13 PM
I have encoded a mp4 file and cannot play it on VLC, WMP, DivX, or QT.

Here is how I made it:

I used the Sony AVC (mp4, m2ts, avc) type with a template of Blu-ray 1440x1080-60i, 15Mbps video stream. I then went into custom and chose MP-4 file format (.mp4). Then I clicked the audio tab and chose "Include audio" and left the defaults. I also checked best under project and left the video tab alone.

The project that I encoded from is a straight M2T file with audio.

How do I get the mp4 file to play?

The latest version of QuickTime should play it. Windows Media Player does not play it automatically, but there may be a codec on the web that enables it.

Edit.
This is not a standard mp4 file, see my post below.

I just downloaded the latest quicktime player and it says it is an unsupported format. I did not use the mainconcept version, but the Sony version.

I have done some internet searches and all point to quicktime/itunes, but it is a no go for the flavor of codec I used.

Nero Showtime 3 will play the file (from Nero 7). Did a test render using your settings and it played fine. Hope this helps.

Wow. I tried that one too (I have Nero 7 Ultimate) and could not get the player to even recognize the file in the file folder. What exact version are you using?

when you use the Sony mp4 player and choose a blue-ray template, it changes the file extension from .mp4 to .avc

Rereading your post, I see you made a Blue ray file. This is different from a standard mp4 file, I'm guessing. It's probably a mp4 stream in a Blue ray wrapper. If you are looking to make a mp4 file to play on the web, do not use the Blue Ray templates.

I was actually using this to compress it down under 4 gigs so I could view it on the PS3. So far no luck though as I can't get anything to read it.

So are you burning a blue ray disc?
jrazz wrote on 2/13/2008, 8:40 PM
No. I am just wanting to save it to a compact flash card or stream it over the network and copy it to the ps3 hard drive. No discs involved.

I actually went back and did a VC1 file and it plays just fine and looks excellent on my 1080 HDTV via the PS3.

Even though I made another file that works, I am now curious how to use the mp4 sony file if I can't play it, why would I encode to it? It doesn't appear that I am alone.

The MP4 you created should play without issue on the PS3. The PS3 may not read it properly if from a media server so just play it from a usb stick/drive or dvd (or copy to the PS3 harddisk). Seems like the last update to the PS3 changed how it reads media from DLNA servers.

When you create a video as you did it's AVC/H264 video with AAC audio put into a Mpeg4 container.

I haven't gotten VLC for windows to play these IF they are encoded interlaced.
Using VLC they play if I encode them as progressive.
PowerDvd7 Ultra can play them, Nero 8 can play them.
As far as I can tell WMP11 for Vista doesn't like anything in mpeg4 containers.

You can also encode to m2ts and force WMP11 to play them. To do this though you need to have a avc/h264 codec/decoder installed & registered on your system.
My Vista install using WMP11 plays the m2ts with avc/h264 video.
My PS3 plays all the formats in that selection (mp4 & m2ts) except the pure AVC extension which is video only.

15MBS is also a high bit-rate for avc/h264 unless you have a Core2 Duo or higher, (hardware acceleration helps) and the correct codec. The PS3 has no problems with 15MBS. If your using a P4 to playback try 4MBS to 6MBS.

Make sure you put any video on an SD or memorystick card in a file folder called Video or the PS3 won't see it.

When that happens, highlight the SD Card or USB Device.
Hit the "Triangle" button (Options) and select "Display All", then you can read the root directories on media.

I also use Nero 7 Ultimate, the latest version. Strange why it works on my system, but not yours. Perhaps you could download a version 8 trial. Good luck.

I tried the triangle button but it does not even see the file on the card. It sees the VC1 file as well as a folder that contains the veg file (backup).

razz,
Somethings not making sense, today I played some mp4's encoded from Vegas.
I have the latest firmware updated on the PS3.
Maybe reformat that SD card.

If anything it has to see the mp4 extension, stupid question, there is a dot to before the extension correct? My eyes are bad and I actually do mess up file extensions sometimes on my windows machine. Is Vegas putting the correct extension?
If anything the PS3 should read the file and if there's something wrong it will say "Corrupt Data".
Make sure you are in the "VIDEO" portion on the PS3 navigator screen, if your in the Music or Pictures it will not display any video extensions.
jrazz wrote on 2/14/2008, 3:51 PM
The VC1 file on the card can be seen just fine. The mp4 file cannot. I even moved the file to the shared network directory for streaming and it did not work and again, the VC1 file (along with all the other files) could be seen.

I am/was in the video directory as it pulled up the VC1 file on the card just fine and when I tried it through the media server all the other videos showed up just fine. The . is after the name and before the extension. The name for both the vc1 and the mp4 are the same, just different extensions.

Did you happen to do a test encode with the settings I gave above? I would be curious if you could get your ps3 to see them. (Also, my ps3 is current).

If you want, I can probably upload the file somewhere, but it is 2.3 gigs in size.

Razz,
That's how I've been making them except that I will click on the Video tab, maybe change the bit-rate and/or fielding if required.
I do apply a name and save the file as a template. I did come across when not saving as a template some of the settings didn't take in the output file. That may be the case so that video may really be a AVC only in a avc container with the mp4 extension.

I would make the mp4 file again, a short 2 minute encode. This time though click on the video tab, check the settiings, rename the original template to Mpeg4 avc/h264 w/audio etc & save the template.
After you exit to save and encode the video go back and double check the settings again.
I have come across some cases where I have to save the template or something comes out wrong, I think that was if I was using the "Default" template, can't remember.

As far as I can see the only difference between mine is I double check the bit-rates & fielding and I so save as a template for future use.

Only guessing but it sounds like your mp4 isn't a mp4 file. I could be wrong.
Or, this is possible, An illegal filename or file extension? Like a space between the . separator and the mp4 ( . mp4 ), I've done this before, my windows screens aren't easy to read.

If I made a file with this custom template and burnt it as a "DVD-ROM (ISO)" onto a DVD+R, should it play on a recent or updated Blu-ray player or PS3?

Or would choosing .mp4 or .avc for the system format give a better chance than .m2ts?
