MP4 files- no audio imported

Steve wrote on 10/11/2024, 11:07 AM

I have a bunch of MP4 files that were purchased to incorporate into a Halloween project. Most import into Vegas (Sony Vegas Pro 13) just fine, but a few import without audio. I used Handbrake to convert them to MP4 files and that fixed the project. Is there any ideas why a few of the MP4 files would not import the audio track?

Not without seeing a MediaInfo report for the subject file(s) or a sample file. Others on the forum are good, but not clairvoyant. I'm just a dullard but would take a scientific approach to helping you solve your dilemma.

Thanks for the reply.

The mediainfo for the "failing" imports is, except for the filesize, identical.

In these files, Addams Family does not import the audio, Sleepy Hollow does.

Both of your video files are Variable Bitrate, which is often problematic or unreliable, especially with older Vegas versions including yours.

The standard fix is to re-encode them in Handbrake, using "Same as Source" and "Constant Bitrate" in the video tab.

Steve wrote on 10/12/2024, 8:32 AM

The oddity is that the same source files (atmosfx.com) were used in prior years with the same version of Vegas. The reason that I use the older version of Vegas is that I retired and rarely use Vegas much these days.

mark-y wrote on 10/13/2024, 11:32 AM

Steve, the fact that you report that one file opens and one does not probably indicates some inconsistencies at their end, and not anything we could pin down for you, since I can find no obvious differences in your MediaInfo.

That said, the conversion of all VFR files to CFR is the very first step at my house, regardless of their source, regardless of the Vegas version I'm using, and even if they open as native VFR.

It's just a troublesome format, designed only to save storage space, not to make our lives easier.

Thanks for marking my reply as The Solution

@mark-y check your auto correction settings, second time that you talk about variable/constant BITRATE but use the abbreviations for variable/constant FRAMERATE...

Yes it is rather confusing. I wasn't aware that VBR gave Vegas problems. VFR yes.

You are both absolutely correct. Brain Fog Day, so please disregard. Unplugging my computer now... 🙃
