Mpeg2 no sound

Reg-Watts wrote on 8/30/2023, 10:38 AM

Problem: when I render a project with the MPEG2 codec, I get the video with no audio. This is a new problem, as I've been using movie studio platinum 15.0 build 157, for a long time with success. the project plays normally in preview mode with sound. I have tried this with several projects with the results, no sound. I use the standard settings for rendering. Something has changed. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software without success.

My computer is running at 3.4 GHz, I have 8 GB of RAM, and running a 64-bit Windows 10 software on a computer with a 1 TB hard drive.

Any suggestions?

Can you show a screenshot of the render options with the MPEG you have chosen? Some of the options do not include audio.

@Reg-Watts said: "when I render a project with the MPEG2 codec, I get the video with no audio"

How are you playing the rendered video?

An external player?

Back on the Vegas timeline?

Reg-Watts wrote on 8/30/2023, 12:00 PM

Actually, I should have shown the render menu.

john_dennis wrote on 8/30/2023, 12:13 PM

Actually, you should have shown the Mediainfo report for the rendered file per this link.

Reg-Watts wrote on 8/31/2023, 8:30 AM

I have tried playing it directly from file on my computer, and after burning a disc, on an external player. No audio

Bear with me.

There is a subtle, but important difference between a file that contains no audio ...

@Reg-Watts
Which template of that codec did you choose.
There are templates for Video only(video stream) and Video plus Audio(program stream)

John

I used the program stream NTSC. Here is the media info for that video , the audio was there (at last I figured it out) but the video was terrible.

I see you are using a Canon 80D, coincidentally, I am trying to buy a used one!

@Reg-Watts said:

Are you hearing the audio now that you've verified that it is, in fact, included in the MPEG-2 program stream?

"I see you are using a Canon 80D, coincidentally, I am trying to buy a used one!"

I don't use a Canon 80D (I have a large collection of samples from different cameras that I use for testing. I've used four Canon G models in my lifetime. I looked at the 80D at one time but didn't buy it because I will never own a camera that records audio to a lossy codec, AAC. I bought a Sony RX10 IV instead. If I won the lottery, I'd probably buy a Canon EOS R5C. But then, I might just pay someone else to shoot it for me and save myself some trouble.

If you still have a problem, upload a short render sample to dropbox, g-drive, etc. and post the link here for others to examine.

I am hearing audio OK now, thanks for the help.

I'm glad you tipped me off on the 80D audio issue. Looks like I need to shift my sights.

Cheers,

Reg

Actually, I still have a problem rendering to MPG. I want to burn a video, so I rendered this short clip using the advanced/Mainconcept/programstreamNTSC codec without customizing. You can see from this Google Drive link, that the image (from cell phone) is fuzzy and has an interference pattern. The audio is OK. To compare, I also rendered with the MP4 codec and it looks fine.

Thanks. This is my first use of Drive. It should work now.

john_dennis wrote on 9/6/2023, 10:48 AM

Looks like field order / deinterlacing defugalty to me. I'm not an expert since I have made my life's work avoiding interlaced video.

Reg-Watts wrote on 9/6/2023, 2:13 PM

A defulgality for certain! I get the same effect using clips from my Canon G9x too. Just for fun, I'm trying out Vegas Pro. Thanks for staying tuned.

I got the same poor rendering results in Vegas Pro, SO ... my workaround, which works in both VMS Plat15 and VEGAS PRO is to render the file in MP4, and convert it to MPEG2 in another program. The quality is good. Then I can burn to a DVD disc. Seems unnecessary, but at least I can get on with my work.

Thanks for your help and patience.
