D'yer remember a fairy story - regal regalia? Kingly Kit? Encased Emperors? I was being "Altogether" ironic - What's Sauced for the Gazer IS salt for the Grandier? - Ah infants always spy the difference and SAY as they don't SEE it . . . . DANNY was o'KAYE about this humourous ditty . ..

. . .. . . grazie . . . .

The Question:

How much fun would you thik it would be to try and design a site a bunch of creative video guys would like?

The Answer:

Not much!

I kinda like it.... quite polished and tasteful looking. Just my 2 cents worth :)

It's going to take me a while to get used to it. Kinda like after driving a 5 speed all my life and going to an automatic. Even though I use an automatic, i still prefer the 5 speed.
:)

Oh, VideoCurmudgeon.. forgot to make a special video for you over the weekend...
But, Buffalo lost against Miami yesterday so oh well. :)

Friar, I would have liked to have seen the video!

Who cares what it looks like, it's the information inside that counts and that is excellent! You're starting to sound like Zippy :)

"The Question:

The Answer:

No less fun than designing a video a bunch a clients would like. The layout is fine, very nice, in fact. But the color... can you say "drab," "boring," "cold," "lifeless"?

So/Fo created HOT products that are SMOKING. This site should reflect that. This pasty blue/green looks like a forum site for my grandmother's crochetting club.

Just one guy's opinion, and remember, opinions are like noses...!

Two hundred years ago I would have had to demand satisfaction! Lucky for you my matched set of dueling pistols are at the gunsmith's for polishing. ;o)

Insipid is the word that comes to mind. Cold also fits.

Maybe they are goin for that sony blue i always hear about.

Didn't the font get smaller?

That's the only complaint I have. I have font size in IE set to largest, but it doesn't seem to help in this forum. I'm pretty sure it was easier to read before.

RexA wrote on 9/22/2003, 5:28 PM
From the other thread, I see that I can change the font size using 'Edit Account' at the top of this page.

That works for me.
TheHappyFriar wrote on 9/22/2003, 11:19 PM
Did Sony do something to the forums AFTER i went to work? None of the posts i visited before 5p EST are "light blued" out. Grrr... want to put fist through monitor...

I think they should of stayed with the black/white/red scene. it looked awsome/. I hope this means Vegas 5 won't look like the Windows XP kiddy interface! :)

Better yet, they should do the forum in the classic green on black, just like the old monitors! That looked soooooooooo cool!

Oh, VC, I belive the actuatul number of colors 16.777.216 (24bit color = 2^24). So, that had even MORE options! :)

An no speel check opiton yet. :)

hehehe

Its really AMAZING the lack of knowledge in this forum. People rant and bellyache and don't even know what they're ranting about.

1. You can't get 16 million colors to reproduce on every web browser, in fact the choices are rather limited and most people authoring web pages (professionally) stay within a so-called 'web safe' palette of just 216 colors or minor varations from that base. If you vary too much, you don't know how the colors will get reproduced on the hundreds of different makes/versions of browsers still in use since the browser may dither the colors and the result can be ugly. Don't make the mistake of thinking the colors YOU see on your browser is the same I or someone else sees. Not exactly.

2. The new color scheme and design is a improvement. The font choices are better, bigger, easier to read and there is more contrast plus you have a cleaner, less cluttered look. Nice job!

3. The choice of colors is now close to what other major Sony sites have and so is the overall design. You would expect as much after a buy out.

Thanks Rex! Now that I can adjust the font size maybe I'll stick with the forum.

Really, this font is just awfully thin and spidery.

Nah. It just looks awful and the default font was unreadable. I eventually found that I could set it to "Larger" in the "edit account section". That was an eye saver.

My first impression was "Yep, this is Sony. It's uncomfortable and kind of like a slap in the face." Much like the electronics divisions tech support. Both consumer and pro.

I'd call this look the 12 foot unshielded monitor cable look.

Is anyone having problems with threads not showing up as read? I seem to be having that problem. But.. the individual posts in the thread show read. Hmm...

Oh, BB, i know about the browser thing, but since we don't need to worry about mac users here (well, for the most part, since that don't usually run these products), they have more leway in the way it looks. Also, their shades of blue DEFINATLY fall outside the web "safe" palate. Just their "support forums" pic up top contains about 200 shades/colors of blue!

You are right though that the color choices/graphics are closer to the other sony sites. But, I find the other sony sites cluttered and slow to load (especially screenblast.com), so i don't bother going to them. But, they probely assume that dialup users will just wait for graphics to load (like people who use LOTS of flash on their site).

I think this is the new 'skin' Sony is trying out in "Sony Vegas Video 5" ??

It guess it fits because it gets friggin cold here in Minnesota! :)-

I'm using Mozilla Firebird 0.6 on WXP with 24 bits/pixel. How many colors will it reproduce?

BillyBoy wrote on 9/23/2003, 1:03 AM
For those having trouble with reading the forum and making changes under Edit Account isn't enough if you have the latest version of Microsoft's Explorer Browser (version 6, it may have been different in earlier versions) try this:

Tools/Internet Options/Accessibility try checking/unchecking the four options, then don't forget to refresh your web page. For best result you'll need to make a custom Style Sheet. How is explained in hundreds of web sites. They can be made very quickly (a minute or two) in any text editor. Just save with the .css extension. Then you can select a font family and font size more to your liking. The down side is of course it will effect ALL web sites you visit unless you don't mind switching back and forth.

What's more amazing it is ALWAYS the same idiots like Zippy and Bobo that keep sticking their foot in their mouth over and over.

Trying to educate buffoons is really pointless. For those that WANT to learn; Hint: It has NOTHING to due with how many colors your graphic card can reproduce rather how some colors end up looking due to something called dithering.

Accordingly only the following colors are "safe" and look the same regardless what browser you use. If you use other colors they may look funny on some browsers, not all.

See: http://www.lynda.com/hexh.html
bobojones wrote on 9/23/2003, 1:23 AM
Now this is getting interesting. Let's see if you can answer five simple questions.

Q1. If I set my bit depth to 8 bits/pixel, how many colors can my browser reproduce without dithering?

Q2. If I set my bit depth to 16 bits/pixel, how many colors can my broswer reproduce without dithering?

Q3. If I set my bit depth to 24 bits/pixel, how many colors can my browser reproduce without dithering?

Q4. Can you explain what Linda, (from your reference), means by this statement? "The only reason to use the browser-safe palette is if you have a concern that your Web design work will be viewed from a 256 color (8-bit) computer system."

Q5. Why would Linda say this? "Though this might seem blasphemous to older readers of my books, or loyal website visitors, I believe it's safe to design without the palette."

> Hint: It has NOTHING to due with how many colors your graphic card can reproduce rather how some colors end up looking due to something called dithering.
