frankly i wouldn't have any problem shelling out what they're asking if they could guarantee rock solid, reliable editing.
as a commercial investment $4k (or a little bit more) on a pc (incl. all the software, etc.,) that will last me 3 years seems reasonable enough, heck my z5 was about $5k and i only look to 3 years out of it before moving on...
what worries me though is what bob (farss) brought up - the z5 WORKS, vegas for the most part works, (but not in caps!) now, if, as i wrote, they can guarantee the system to be as reliable as their cameras....
and, as mentioned elsewhere in this thread, it's not really a suite of apps, more a bundle since the integration between them all isn't really the equivalent of say cs4 suite...
but what the hell - where's 9d and then we'll talk.....
As far as intergration, I always though it would be cool if you could nest ACID projects in Vegas so you could edit your loops, or vice versa.
I know you can just render a small video file for ACID, or keep rendering .wavs to Vegas. But when you are experimenting with lining up music, audio and video, it would be easier just to have it nested and automatically updated as you make changes in ACID.
A small step to making it a "suite."

Joran,
Couple things - firstly - I do not and would not purchase from a NewEgg or similar. I am been building for a long while and use wholesale suppliers whenever possible.
Secondly - you are speculating on your list...no where does the Master Suite indicate the use of expensive premium "Dominator" RAM, it does not specify keyboard, mouse or any other components to be included...matter of fact it doesn't even tell us what motherboard they intend to use...which could be anywhere from okay - to el-cheapo.
Here's a listing (in CDN bucks yet) of what I could buy, bring home and build tonight - including a premium PSU , a very premium case and a high end motherboard as well:
Furthermore - If I did go out and select all of this stuff in one pass - I could easily grind my guys further as a package deal to get it down.
Not to get into some huge p****in match here - all I am saying is - there is a vast difference in 1762 CDN and 4000 USD. Like one of the other folks said - cost and value are two different things. Despite what is included in the suite - it sounds overpriced to me specifically (being that I am an owner of the entire suite already).
If you are a brand new user with no machine and no software - I think it's a solid deal. I guess I am coming solely from the hardware side on this...and was hoping for more details on what is really under the hood.
This is actually great!
Someone on this forum should get one of these systems.
If we get into another problem/bug where the hardware is being questioned and if a person with that system can duplicate the problem he/she can officially rule out any hardware issues.
We will now have some hardware benchmarks.
All they have to do now is tell us the supermicro motherboard they are going to use for this and we can ALL build stable machines.
I built a machine several years ago and published the hardware list here on the Vegas forum. In fact, it is probably the most stable machine I have ever owned. A number of people built machines to these specs and their machines were quite stable.
It's outdated now but I still have it in service. The point is that the specs for a stable Vegas machine were posted here three years ago and people that built them were happy.
I am a firm believer in that the most Intel compatible machine has an Intel motherboard, Intel CPU and Intel chipset. This belief has been born out by my great success sticking to this combination. That said, at the moment, it would likely be the Intel DP55KG motherboard with an i7-980x CPU and some sort of Corsair brand memory, Seagate drives and a PC Power and Cooling power supply. All of this in an Antec 1200 enclosure as it provides the maximum amout of airflow over the components and heat is the enemy.
Its good news that SCS is offering a package that includes hardware and support. The nest step is more integration of vegs between apps and temp files. Adding a real media manager with a customizable interface would be a killer package.
I was just talking to a famous "pro photographer" who been in the EU recording the CERN project for a major museum and we started discussing equipment cost of his profession and the collapsing market for pros. Still photographers and video pros face serious challenges getting good paying contracts. He was expressing "regrets" passing up the BBC job for the next "Planet Earth". First, he thought the three year deal was too time demanding, but print mags contracts are dying faster than most pros expected.
My point here is that SCS maybe thinking ahead for next year's market. With the feed back with this "package" integration and cost, they will be able to catch the new market of "talent" that will be replacing the Apple's FCP talent pool. And Hollywood's famous for squeezing the talent pool and re-inventing itself.
For Coursedesign, don't expect Steve to spent a lot of resources on FCP....... Steve has kick up too many hornet nests......... too many legal issues demanding resources.......... Steve's focus is protecting the gravy train it has in mobile devices, which is the smart thing to do! Of course, Steve having coffee with Google's boss was more "show" for apple image than google. Google will be able too demonstrate that its has been researching mobile cells for a long time before apple started the iphone. The fact is, google was a serious bidder for cell airways wayback and had cell network agreements in place. Apple gained more info from google than reverse, but facts never count in AppleWorld....... hahahahaha. A little known secret about att and apple deal is that att was buying time from google by cutting a sweet deal for apple, both wanting to slow MS mobile development and market share.
"I wonder if this spells the beginnings of a new era for Vegas (the hardware accelerated era)"
I think it just represents an entry level workstation-class card being used in a workstation. However, I think the card has 10-bit output so I assume it'd be a good choice to use with a 10-bit display like an HP DreamScreen.
Like John C, I am a firm believer in intel mainboards. There seems to be much less compatibility problems when using them - but I would warn to stay away from any with integrated graphics cards (shudders).
I like the SuperMicro boards too though. They may cost a bit more but, in my experience with them, they are also rock stable.
I like the fact that Sony is finally giving us some type of guidelines (preferences) for systems to use with Vegas. I don't fault any company for wanting to make a nickle or dime but those systems do seem to be a bit overpriced. Maybe they have a lot of fear factor built in to the price for support issues.
one of the biggest problems w/Vegas (all versions) is that it doesn't appear to truly release memory back after I edit with it and shut it down (v8 or 9, same as far back as earlier builds)... and that's on a 4gig machine winxp ... my whole pc is slower only after I use vegas; tested this dozens of times over the years... only true fix is to reboot after using vegas, so all my memory is available...
I wish they'd figure out memory correctly w/vegas... and the other issues you guys have been raising... seems vegas hasnt gone anywhere much this last 2 years..
