Newbie Timeline rendering settings

I've used other editing software (consumer) that will render whatever changes you make on the timeline while you continue to edit. This way, you can see the color corrections, transitions, etc. how they will look.

Since I work a lot with UHD 4K, I find I can't even play back smoothing a fade transition in a title. Project Properties are UHD 4K.

My question is... if I decide to Project Properties to a lower resolution (HDV720), will that affect the final output, which I want to be UHD 4K? Would editing at that resolution on the timeline be like working with proxy files?

Thanks for any help in this. Consider me someone brand new to Vegas 15. And again, even looking at a cross dissolve between to clips on the timeline is not smooth. Even a simple Slide Right in a title stutters.

Computer specs:

AMD Ryzen 7 1700X overclocked to 3.9Ghz (AIO water cooled)

16GB DDR4 3200 RAM

MSI Gaming X RX480 8GB video card

Scratch disc is a SSD.

I think you misunderstood the "entire" context of my question. I also said color correction or transitions (plural). I asked for help not sarcasm. Also to be able to play back a Slide Right in the title. 😉

So what is the answer then to the rest of my questions? I did say I was brand new to the software.

Changing the project properties will not make the 4K play any easier. You would have to make true proxies. Vegas does not automatically pre-render like some programs do. But you can pre-render as needed to check an effect or transition.

@Cornico thanks for your reply. What I am trying to do (and very unsuccessfully) is work with UHD 4K on the timeline and get a decent playback (even if at lower resolution) to have an idea of what changes (I do know about the Split Screen View) and to get a smooth playback.

I am learning my way around the software. I've watched a lot of tutorials to get up and running. But my lack of how the software works and where things are to improve playback are starting to frustrate me. I see the power and capability in this software (that's why I bought it), but have gotten used to a smooth playback of the timeline and rendered changes shown at full playback and resolution with other lesser capable software.

@Cornico, to the manual I go. Lots of reading. I'm so accustomed to fumbling my way through things, I sometimes forget that there is a manual. It does say it creates proxy files automatically for 4K editing. I am seeing it now where it says it's building proxies.... 54 out of 270... I'll just leave things alone until it's finished. This is the first time I've seen this.

I too regularly work with 4K UHD. Any 4K video will give laggy playback in the raw project file, especially if your computer isn't particularly powerful. To help reduce the slowdown, I would recommend reducing the Preview resolution, rather than the resolution of the project itself. This will ensure that your video remains in 4K when you render the finished project. The Preview window isn't that big anyway.

To do this, change this setting to something lower than Best (Full) or Good (Full). I would recommend either Preview (Auto) or Draft (Auto).

And don't worry if playback still lags in VEGAS Pro. The video should be completely fine in its rendered file. (Playback lag on your computer's video player may occur if your computer's not very powerful, but the video should play normally on YouTube.)

@SamJoex thanks for some first hand info. @Nick Hope, great reading. Book marking that! I've been editing since 1990 starting with Commodore Amiga with genlocks, Video Toaster and Opalvision. I had several accelerated Amiga's. Fun days of a/b roll. Moved to PC (it was hard) with DPS Editbay, then Matrox RT2500, Pinnacle DV500 w/Premiere 6, Pinnacle Edition (FAST) through Avid Liquid. Then my editing demands lowered, so went with Avid Studio, which was a big drop from Liquid. I moved from video editing to computer networking and custom builds. More money, less headache than editing. Now, there are times I want to do "more", and Vegas is relatively inexpensive compared to the other "pro" editors except Resolve. So, I bought V15 Suite and am determined to learn it. But at my retirement age (and brain), I do need help with where and how the software functions.

So thanks to everyone for their replies and help. It will take a while for this "one brain cell" left to process this info. But dang, this is going to be a fun ride!
