Maybe try reaching out to the community to see if anyone else has experienced the same bug and found a solution? Tell us your system specs, the media you are using (download https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo to get that info), the version of vegas you are using, what GPU driver version you are using, and then we might be able to point you towards a solution, or at least notify the devs of what is causing the problem.
I found that some stability problems and crashes stemmed from the Vegas 16 process (shown on the Details tab of the Task Manager) never terminating or taking a long time to terminate after a File > Exit. It looks like RAM is very slowly released some times. I've had times where two or three instances of Vegas were running even though I did a File >Exit on all of them.
So, after exiting Vegas 16, check the Details tab of the Task Manager to see if Vegas 16 is still running in the background. The Process tab will probably not show Vegas 16 even though it is shown on the Details tab.
You are not dreaming Corey. I have also been with Vegas since the Sonic Foundry days, and I find 16 to be the most unstable yet. I see people saying, but you should do this and this and that so it will not crash. Well, 14 and 15 didn't crash nearly this badly and I didn't have to do this and that and go to look at this link or that forum. Personally, I feel it was released prematurely and the initial users are simply beta testers.

Is it just me or are other people having stability issues with Vegas 16?
I have to say, Vegas 16 is not bad as Version 11, 12.
I started using Vegas from version 10. Then bought v11, v12, but because these versions was really bugy, I stayed with v10 until these days.
Few weeks ago I switched to Vegas 16 and it is stabler than v11 or v12. Not stable as version 10, but it is usable. I already succesfully finished few big projects in vegas 16 and I am quite happy with this version.
New scrubbing function is some times forcing Vegas to crash, but not so often.
But, there is still a lot of things to do, to make Vegas better software.
I have a similar experience, being with Vegas since version 5. I have the new PC machine since spring, running mainly Vegas Pro 14 (the most stable version for me) and VP15 still testing for little projects. VP15 falls like three times a day when working on it professionally (which is relatively good). I can run VP14 several days with many complicated projects opened and working nearly flawlessly with CPU only (now I have Intel i8700 with UHD 630 and 16GB RAM, but some codecs I need work with are able to use only about 30 % of my system resources). The trial version of VP16 has crashed immediately after I hit play on demo project after opening. Bad start. I tried to set usual things to make it more stable (disable GPU, and some other usual tweaks), but without success. I am disappointed because I purchased version 15 (which was promoted supporting newest Intel HD graphics technology) and I can't use it as well as version 14 even without GPU. I have no motivation to upgrade on VP16. I would like to support developing and even buy the new version, but now I am waiting to see some progress in resolving stability issues. I am ready for a subscription model VEGAS 365, but wondering about stability very much. For me, VEGAS PRO is the main software for my business. I have limited time to make experiments. I want to set up the user interface and work, not to debug the software.
There are so many different codec's, plugins, and other issues I think it is incumbent on folks to find what works best for them, with any NLE you may have to compromise on codec's and plugins to find one that works 100% of the time. Work on a Mac if you want a closed environment and pay the premium without the ability to get a powerful rendering machine for much less $$$$.

Give me the unique working environment and user control interface of VEGAS (which is nearly the same from version 3) to any closed system or set up the conditions of 100% working solution you can provide a guarantee. It's fair for the money. Or we can not talk about a professional solution.
