Noticed something odd with V21 and video decode

andyrpsmith wrote on 8/26/2023, 8:38 AM

Here is V20 screenshot of task manage showing video decode playing clip.

Here is V20 file I/O with cuda selected on 1080TI

Here is V21 screen shot of task manager same clip showing no video decode

Here is V21 file I/O cuda selected on 1080TI

Why the difference and no video decode?

Same (I deselected legacy HEVC)

This test is a little confused.

Firstly, CUDA isn't going to do anything to decode what looks to be a Sony HEVC file. That's for raw video, as it says.

The difference is that in 20 legacy HEVC is unchecked. In 21 it is checked. Try to repeat the test and see if there's a difference with NVDEC between the two.

Also share MediaInfo for the media we are using as details matter. https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

Also if you want to see CUDA activity in task manager/performance you need to change one of the boxes to it:

Tried it with HEVC unchecked last image. I'll look at CUDA box. Thanks.

Update, I do not have a CUDA box in task manager only video decode.

Wonder why I have more options than you do in task manager as we have same generation GPUs.

I do have the CUDA Runtime installed (helps with AI audio transcription) and the studio driver.

Anyway, for your HEVC test, can you share a screenshot with it unchecked and task manager/performance?

Can you also share the MediaInfo I requested so someone else can try to replicate your findings? Type of media is extremely important, especially for HEVC. See Todd's post here.

RogerS wrote on 8/26/2023, 9:09 AM

I see you added posts while I was typing this.

To repeat, raw processor is for raw video. YOU DO NOT HAVE RAW VIDEO, like Blackmagic Raw. So OpenCL and CUDA have no bearing on this. You have NVDEC (NVIDIA Decoder).

Okay so I guessed wrong and this is AVC, meaning that legacy HEVC or not will also make no difference.

So why is Sony 4K 8-bit AVC not decoding with NVENC in 21? That's a great question. In your case, given the slow CPU it seems really important for getting reasonable playback performance.

Sorry I did not understand the RAW video issue now I do from your explanation. Thanks.

The HEVC is a red herring I do not have any HEVC footage and I think I changed it while trying to help another user, I unchecked it now and as you say it makes no difference.
Yes I am trying to under stand why V20 is showing video decode and V21 (trial version) does not on the same clip. Many thanks for helping.

I have got it working by changing RAW to auto and reselecting NVENC:

Something strange went on as it works whatever setting RAW is set on now. My son has just bought an i9 13900K 24 cores maybe I need to go there too as I too want to play Starfield which needs 6 cores (I'm going to try with my 4 cores first though!).

Raw should be a red herring as well. (If there's a link with NVDEC that's a bug).

Sometimes if a clip has already loaded from the last playback it won't show NVDEC activity. Is that what's happening? If you just play through a number of X-AVC S clips on the timeline is there decoding activity for all of them? If not and there seems to be a bug, please report back.

The i9 13900K is a great processor, though power and cooling needs are extreme. It also has an Intel iGPU that's capable of decoding HEVC and AVC very well. Personally I went with the i5-13600K as my main use is VEGAS, the iGPU is the same and I don't really want liquid cooling or massive power draw. It holds its own (see the benchmarks in my signature).

Played through all clips and all are showing video decode now so all looks good. Many thanks for responding.
