Ripple: "on" or "off" is really a matter of discipline. Oh yes, I get caught too, but "undo" fixes that. My default is "off" until I want a ripple, then turn it off again. Unfortunately flexibility involves choices and with those comes the possibility of making mistakes. We would still get caught even if the whole screen went red when ripple was "on", because we'd be thinking about other things.

All of the above and Vegas not remembering where projects gets saved versus where clips get saved / rendered to and this should be on a per project basis. Sorry if that's been mentioned before but for someone who mostly posts others work and has literaly 4 or 5 active projects running at once it's a major PIA. Add to that 6 or 7 drives on a system and somedays boy do I loose the plot.

Loses compression settings between renders unless you save a template.

BOB! I nominate this as the funniest post of the week! Thanks guy, you've cheered me up!

Default folder when you hit Open or Save As, or go to run a script... never seems to be in a useful location. If you open a project, the default folder should be set to that folder, just like MS Office. So when you hit Save As... it will be in the right place instead of where you last rendered, or where you opened a project last week.

Each thing should have its own default folder:
- Render As...
- Save As...
- Tools | Run Script...
- Import Media...

I waste a lot of time just navigating through folders...

(sorry bob - just noticed I duplicated your post heheh)

Could someone explain why the defaults on the MPEG2 encoder are incorrect? I don't seem to have a problem with them.

Keyframe curve control... (in/out)

We need bezier handles - or some way to get smooth control over multi-point pan/zooms. Just trying to make a smooth path across a static photo... having the camera pause on areas of interest... has proven impossible. I try the "Slow" preset or the "Fast" preset or the "Smooth" preset but what I really need is to see the path and control the approach and departure rates seperately. (like AfterFX, 3dsMAX, Premiere)

I too would like to see improvements with the bezier mask. Be nice to have some preset shapes to use as a start (rectangle, circle, elipse etc...)

Vidcap...

I go through the process of setting up my AVC 300 software settings to suit the tape I am currently importing....but somehow vidcap changes the colorising settings..Obly slightly but enough to warrant having to recolor.

Then it has this capacity to drop frames when I do not expect it to... ( ha ha )

and amazingly where I am handling old worn out and even repaired VHS tapes.. it behaves...

To me the program is an important aspect of Vegas....so why is it left in the 'too hard basket' ???????????

Media Manager

I have not used this feature solely due to the load time it adds to Vegas.
fldave wrote on 3/10/2006, 3:21 PM
JJK,

When you select Mainconcept MPEG-2, the "Default Template" predefined settings are less than optimal (nice way of putting it):

Audio: 224 Kbps, 44,100 Hz, Layer 2 (not 48,000 Hz)
Video:
quality=15 (out of 31 for DVD Arch video stream)
Max bps=6MBps (8MBps for DVD Arch video stream)
Avg bps=4MBps (6MBps for DVD Arch video stream)

There may be some advanced setting different. This is why most everyone recommends DVD Architect video stream preset.

Yeah,
that's why I'll NEVER be a screenwriter.
JJKizak wrote on 3/10/2006, 4:26 PM
I always make sure mine says var 8meg bitrate, max quality, 48k , single pass.
I guess I pay no attention to the default.

Nested timelines. I can still hear the ball bouncing from the drop last April.

To me, "intuitive" is a measure of how likely it is that i can guess what to do.

I don't much care for having to guess. The little left/right arrows on the keyframe tracks are my definition of intuitive. Just guess what they do!

I always leave it off and do ripples manually with the keystrokes.

And yet this was one of the big favorites in the other thread. What's wrong with them?

Ohhh YES!

I do a lot of work that involves callouts and some abiliity to have a library of shapes or even import some custom ones would be SUPER.

I don't know. I love Nested vegs.. There was a problem with the length of a veg on the timeline inaccurate if there were markers, but it was not a big problem with my workflow.

I forgot one BIG request that I gave up asking for after Vegas 5 (in addition to fixing the credit roll, titler, and flash frames):

an UNSPLIT button.

And for that matter, how many of you have had to UNDO six things in order to fix something? I would take the ability to change something without having to undo everything I did over nested vegetables any day of the week.

1) Smart re-sample enabled by default. And you can't set it to disabled by default in the Preferences or Property settings. I have to remember to manually disable it on every media in nearly every project I work on.

2) The fact that track motion causes huge quality loss, not like using pan/crop on media. I had a project with several panning child media that had to move together with the parent media. My only option was using track motion on the parent media... so the child media looked like garbage.

3) Lack of scene splitting during capture (HDV).

"I don't care about the renaming (in fact I like it). Its that I cannot "Save As" to the "current" directory, have all files outside that directory copied into that directory, and have all files inside that directory (or subfolders, or perhaps this could be optional) REMAIN UNCHANGED. After all, why would I want to duplicate a file in the same directory?"

I couldn't agree more. In fact I have a few scripts that try to adress this issue, if you'd like to try them out.

I agree with you both, except I would like to have the OPTION of not renaming ANY of the files when I Save As to the current folder. This makes it easier for me to search for all uses of a specific file across projects.

CDM, I am interested in your scripts. Can you upload them to VAAST?

Excellent news.

I must admit I hadn't noticed that the defaults had been changed in V.6.0d - I was thinking back to the numerous times people who've bought Vegas on my recommendation have rung me saying "I love the way it works but the output is horrible" and me having to remind them to use the appropriate DVD or DVD Architect presets rather than the default. Hopefully that won't be happening any more.

Then you obviously haven’t tried it with Vegas 6.0d. The load time is almost imperceptible. Maybe an additional second. Sony did an incredible job and fine tuning the Media Manager. If load time was your issue, you should really give it another chance.
