For those either considering, or already having executed a 'clean' install of the latest NVidia driver, I would like to make a comment and request feedback.
It is my understanding that choosing the 'clean install' option only removes any user personal settings from earlier driver updates and installs the updated driver version with NVidia default settings.
Am I correct in thinking then that those having chosen the 'clean install' method have set some personal settings using the NVidia Control Panel and if so, what settings did you choose to change from default, why and did you notice any noticeable improvements?
"It is my understanding that choosing the 'clean install' option only removes any user personal settings from earlier driver updates and installs the updated driver version with NVidia default settings."
Where did you get that from? Where you "told" this by another Vegas<>nVidia user or straight from the nVidia site?
What I read on nVidia concerning clean install was this: "Option to perform a clean installation ("
And that, right there, with my latest foray into this murky underworld of Video drivers was the selling point to me? My "personal settings" I couldn't really see as being anything more than "Shades of Grey" - if you catch my drift? What I wanted was a new start for this new driver set.
Checking the option 'Perform a Clean Installation' results in the following being displayed next to a yellow caution triangle:-
'A clean install restores all NVIDIA settings to the default value and removes any profiles you have created'.
So no, nothing from another Vegas/Nvidia user but straight from the site - or rather the message displayed during the install process.
Additionally, (my own observation this) is that when an updated driver is installed if one watches the install process carefully the update first removes old version of things prior to installing the latest. Hence the reason why one only ever sees never version in Windows Add/Remove programme list. User settings, however, remain as is unless the clean install option is chosen.
On my computer selecting clean install forces a restart. This isn't the case when using automatic install. This ==leads me to believe== that clean install means uninstalling previous drivers.
nVidia's comment on profile removal on clean install is vague about what happens beyond profile removal. As far as profiles, the only thing I really set are for my monitor color/contrast/vibrance/etc. Also, I would note that on my laptop, I am forced to respecify my nVidia card as the default graphics processor in the nVidia control panel.
I performed a "clean" install of 310.90 last night, as I had nothing personal to be reset.
I did check installed components, using the nVidia ctl panel prior, and noted that there were components, seemingly duplicates, that were left over from the previous driver installation.
Checking same, after clean install, only had one of each of those components.
Have not noticed anything good or bad with this driver wrt to Vegas. Once I can successfully load Vegas 11 or 12, they are both stable.
MP4s render fine, 32bit full range etc are behaving fine, as expected.
Well *this* time I installed 310.90
It took it a day to malfunction as I mentioned in my previous message.
Same deal - screen all pixilated and same message when I left click on the screen.
Alls I was running was Cobian backup which is about zero drain on video.
If this continues I shall go back to 301.42 again.
I agree, sounds more like a heat related problem, possibly the newer drivers let the GPU get pushed harder and hence hotter.
It might pay to check for fur balls in the GPU heatsink etc.
Installed on my dell workstation ( 2 x nvidia quadro 4000's ).
preview stutters like hell on a simple cross fade .
Turned GPU back to off ( as always ).
All back to normal and fast.
Turning on GPU makes vegas using about 6% processor use ( together with another 6 % NT kernel use ) when simply started and not yet doing anything at all.
( which goes to , of course , zero procent when doing nothing at all ( and GPU off ))
After effects though seems to like this driver ( as boris red does )
pffftttt...... but really don't care much since the dual xeons and lots of RAM do their job well in vegas pro ?
i'm using 310.90.... older 3.2ghz processor, 2 gig video ram, 4 gig system ram... didn't help my preview - still need to set it at 0 or it is JERK-CITY
With the new driver cleanly installed, preview performance went down dramatically using GPU. For AVCHD footage (1080_60P) with only titles and transitions, only 30 fps at Best-Full. With GPU off, it was back to 59 fps.
A second problem--debugmode frameserver quit working. Fortunately, I had created a system restore point prior to installing the updated driver.
Downloading 301.42 again - just had the pixellation thing and this time it locked my pc stone cold - no mouse - no ctrl/alt/del - nothing - just the pixellated screen.
Most annoying.
Appreciate the suggestions guys but this is a very new pc I just built.
It's been running fine for several months now with an older driver.
Definitely no fur-balls etc.
Besides this particular lockup was right after startup after it had been off for about 3 hours in 50 deg ambient temp. I would be wearing gloves right now except I make too many typos wearing gloves. :o)
Alls I was running was thunderbird in the background while I ate take out fish-n-chips and chilled (heh!) out with a game of Hearts (solitare).
However, the most important point to my mind is that with the older driver it doesn't crash and is rock-solid.
Gotta be the driver eh!
Debug Frameserver and V12 fine with 310.90 here as well. EVGA GTX 660ti with 2GB RAM
Previewing with this GPU gives frame rate about 3x CPU only preview, Best/Full. Source 3 tracks of AVCHD, Sony chromakey, lower 3rd with alpha, text with alpha all simultaneously. With GPU, Best/Full does 20-22 fps.
