Consider this. It won't break the bank and it's the latest tech from AMD.

Or this, if you're flush with cash.

I also like to replace my gef210 vga too to a new passive one which help in Vegas timeline playback too.
Any recommendation? I can buy 750Ti silent and RX460 (modded silent) both around $120.

Which one would be better for Vegas 12? I'm not interested in rendering, just in timeline performance (1080/50p Avchd Gopro3, and Sony TD30 3D MTS files)

These should be smooth 50fps at half resolution with simple dissolve and a little levels/colors fx!

thanks a lot!

I haven't used either of the cards but will likely try the RX 480 because my upgrade cycle is so long. I'm skeptical of passive cooling with the current graphics chipsets, even the RX 460. The number of transisters in the package seems to make passive cooling a non-starter. A good fan design and control algorithm could make even a powerful card quiet when it's not running 100%.

I wish someone would try a RX 460 with Vegas and advise the rest of us.

john_dennis wrote on 10/18/2016, 5:39 PM

Actually, Set should comment on the RX 470 since he is using one. I've been meaning to ask him about his experience with the card. Now, I just did.

Greetings John Dennis, emmanuel & relaxvideo 😄,

I'm using RX470 4GB - but I believe you will get similar experience with RX460 or RX480.

I haven't do a lot of experiment with VP14, but from VP13.453 experience on my last project, so far so good even though my motherboard quite old (old Intel DX58SO2 - only PCIE2 connection - complete spec can be found on my 'profile page'), the preview and playback speed in Vegas Pro is faster then older Radeon HD5750, and now I can working in 32bit floating point Video Level pixel format color space (previously only 8bit).

As for rendering, I lost the Mainconcept AVC/MVC GPU rendering capability as this was hardware-coded (so my rendering time now with CPU only is about 1:4), but found the alternate way by using SonyAVC. My previous 'large / big renders' had few 100% GPU load, but it's rarely happening, doesn't interrupting anything. I need to do multiple output to DVD, Blu-ray, and MP4, so I better render whole timeline to Sony AVCHD format, process whole those FXs, color corrections, etc. and from Sony AVCHD, render to my targets. Roughly:

  • AVCHD>DVD (2pass) : 1:1 - (if DVD is just 1pass render - I believe I can reach 1:0.5)
  • AVCHD>SonyAVC Blu-ray : 1:2
  • AVCHD>SonyAVC MP4 (Internet template) : 1:1.5

For DaVinci Resolve, I still learn for the optimized-worfklow.

john_dennis: RX 460-s TDP is 61 W. This is easy for the passive cooling. Also AMD has hardware protection for overheating (working frequencies depend on the environment temperature) , while nvidia only use software protection which in not 100% safe, so only give limited warranty.

set: so you use rx 470's opencl for timeline preview, right? Can you test some 1080/50 or 60p avchd files with dissolve and little fx in 8 bit project if you can play it back at fluid 50-60 fps in half resolution?

thanks in advance

Yes, Best-Half still keep 50fps playback during transition.

On Best-Full, I got 25-30fps during dissolve transition. (Normal clip got around 45-50 fps)

I don't know where this comes from, but like all modern GPUs, NVidia cards have hardware protection, in that the clock speed is adjusted if the temperature reaches certain limits (so-called throttling). This can be tuned further, both for AMD and NVidia cards, with certain software tools. Warranty on my card is 3 years or so; I couldn't really figure out how that compares with AMD.

relaxvideo wrote on 10/19/2016, 4:04 AM

These are OEM infos..

AMD's reaction is made by the integrated Powertune, which can control speed without software. Nvidia's protection is not hardware based. In every case it's controlled by software, that's why it has big delay (0,5 sec compared to AMD 0,00001 sec!) So hw. based controlling is much more faster. Do you remember the big geforce TDR bug? :) Now AMD use modern AVFS instead of DVFS.

And for warranty: you wont have limited warranty. NV limit the warranty to the partners if the problem occured because of not enough (passive) cooling.

Hoping someone could help me with a Radeon problem with Vegas Movie Studio ver. 13:

I "upgraded" from an old XFX Radeon 6950 to a new XFX Radeon RX 580. However, render times are awful. With my 6950, I was rendering faster than real time. The RX 580 just took 6 minutes to render a 90 second clip. I installed the latest recent AMD software (Crimson - 17.10.1731) and OpenCL is available in Preferences/Video (AMD - Ellesmere). And clicking "Check GPU" shows "OpenCL is available" rendering AVC/AAC.

Suggestions?

Is there by chance a Nividia card that has good open CL for Vegas? We Have two users on one of our computers one Uses PrePro CS6 the other Vegas. Is there a card that is good for both? Good CUDA and Open CL?

Wow. I just bought this. Would you recommend I get rid of it and get the 6950 instead? I'm finding that I can edit my 4K videos much better than my old Radeon 280....but when I RENDER them, sometimes it stalls and stops and says "0" frames. I click cancel and Vegas (Pro 13) just hangs. It used to render fine on my old system. There's no rhyme or reason why it hangs or doesn't complete the render. I'm wondering on the absolute best and most reliable settings I should be using in order to as-close-as-possible guarantee a complete render of typically what are 2-hour mp4 wedding videos.

Hmm, I wonder if I should go back to one of those. After all I render only to HD files to BluRay files, which are 1080p. I don't render to 4K yet. I wonder if an older HD card would be more suitable for what I'm doing.
