Opening files causes VEGAS 17 and 18 to crash

Doug-Buseck wrote on 4/19/2021, 9:00 PM

Beginning last Friday 4/16/21, opening files that previously worked in versions 17 or 18 failed to open in their respective version of Vegas Pro 17 or 18. I've checked the Vegas versions, video drivers, Windows updates--all up to date. Not sure what triggered this problem as I have been working files in both programs almost daily for the past few weeks, then Friday night--whammo! The "Vegas Pro has stopped working" dialog box now opens instantly when I attempt to open a file either though the File/Open command or by double-clicking the file in Explorer. Through Saturday, the Vegas program would begin loading the file, and then crash at roughly the 39% to 61% mark. Opening the version 17 files in my older computer (which still has Vegas Pro 17 loaded (and previously worked) also comes up with the same crash and dialog box. Help! What are the media? https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

Myself and others have had problems since Windows 10 updated, specifically the KB5001330 update, although others have mentioned another update. It depends on which version of Windows you have. Uninstalling that update resolved my problem. In my case, it was mts files encoded in surround sound that VEGAS 18 (and 17) did not like, while VEGAS 16 (and earlier) was fine. I have read elsewhere that a beta fix is being evaluated, so hopefully a permanent solution won't be long in coming.

Roger/Matthew - Thanks.

Roger - Several projects I'm working use 95% AVCHD (m2ts) files for the video, with the remainder being PNG stills and WAV audio files. One of the projects also contains old standard def AVI files. Thanks.

Matthew - The KB5001330 update is probably the problem--It installed following a successfully day of editing last Thursday and I've been unable to use VEGAS since. I'll attempt to uninstall it and will advise. Thanks.

Almost exactly the same thing is happening to me with 17. I hope that you find a solution that will work for me too!

Windows Update will not allow me to uninstall that particular update, even though it has only been installed a few days. Some updates can be uninstalled, others cannot. Matthew - Did you hear about the Beta fix here on the forum site, or where? I'm dead in the water unless I want to completely reinstall Windows and can keep that update from loading. Thanks for anything else you can tell us.

I'm suddenly finding that Vegas 18 pro and 17 pro won't open my mts files too. Tried all the usual stuff then came here and saw this. So it's not just me! At least the problem is known and hopefully a fix will appear.

It's already a week old - but I also hope that there will be a solution soon.

If you have access to VP16 there is a fix to get VP17 up and running.

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-18-crashes-when-importing-mts-video-files-with-surround-sound--128505/?page=1

VP18 will be fixed by Magix but maybe not VP17. The solution in the link works only for VP17 not VP18.

Have downloaded and installed VP16, copied the file detailed in link and aplied to VP17. Sample .mts file tested OK.

VP16 was installed but not activated. Copied file & then uninstalled VP16.

Good luck

Hello,

I tested the described method (copying the compoundplug.dll from VP16 to VP17) a few days ago. It works for me to import files with AC3 5.1 tracks into VP17. However, when calling the render dialog, the program crashes. Only the deinstallation of the updates KB5000842 and KB5001330 has brought success so far. Unfortunately, this cannot be a permanent solution.

Hi, do you think this is why when i click on media in the explorer folder/tab it gives a preview but only once & poorly, stopping & starting, then if imported to the timeline it plays bad even in Draft mode I've been tied up with TurboCAD that started crashing a few days ago so didn't notice this,

Frank-Totino wrote on 4/21/2021, 9:46 PM

It's getting worse. Now 17 is crashing dead when I try to open anything.

@Frank-Totino Vegas Pro 18 -  I just had a look at my preferences & as always my GPU Acceleration was on the Nvidia GPU, the drivers for that are up to date & just to check i reinstalled them, but out of curiosity i switched it to the Intel GPU, my videos in preview & timeline now play as well as i expect 👍 this vid in the pictures is 3mins long, i chopped it up & put some long transitions in of different kinds, Rendered out using my usual (NVIDIA) 1080 format, the render time was 1.36mins, which is as good as it's ever been, you can see in the clips when playing the Nvidia driver is still doing most of the work & on rendering out it's sharing with Intel, it all ran smoothly when rendering, nothing screaming like it's doing too much or isn't happy. Why i've had to change or if this is an improvement or not i no idea, & sorry if this is no help to you, just thought i'd share that mine seems to be working fine....... for the moment, 😂😱😏

This is it playing.

The setting i rendered at

Rendering, it says 1.44min but it finished at v1.36mins

The problem i had with TurboCAD Platinum was it was crashing when i tried to open or save a project/file, i think i've fixed it, AVG decided to 'protect' some of my folders, i'd put a few apps in it's exclusion folder inc Vegas but it still was messing me about, so i removed the 'protected' folders from AVG's Ransomware Protection in the Computer selection on the popup & everything works fine again,

Unfortunately for me Windows does not give me the option to uninstall the Windows Updates referenced in this thread. I tried the dll file swap and neither VEGAS 17 or 18 would play the audio tracks. Hoping for a real fix from Magix soon. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. It's nice to engage with helpful people willing to share.
