Opinions on upgrading from GTX 1080 Ti to RTX 4080 or 4090

I'm not sure how much time I would actually use it at full performance ... but from that point of voint 4070/4070 Ti seem like a better "investment" than 3080/3080 Ti.

Maybe not for video editing due to the small memory bus of 4070ti compared to 3080/3080ti. It matters due to having to deal with uncompressed video in processing. Currently Vegas's render engine if so slow, i'd be reasonably confident it doesn't matter, but who knows maybe they'll overhaul Vegas in the next 3 years.

3080ti faster, even 3080 10gb is a bit faster. If they didn't use the 192bit memory bus would be a better product for NLE's.

So I though that I would get RTX 4080, and I went to local shop, it's the same seller since 15 or 20 years and he usually has useful advice... In the whole process I ended up with more questions than answers...

- I measure the space and though my computer case isn't very small, it has component (that I don't want to remove) on the front panel and I'm missing some space for a 4090 and it's hard to tell for most 4080 (I think the 4080 with the Noctua fans would fit but it's almost the price of a 4090 (and it's Noctua-ugly :-) ). There may on of the face components that I can turn 90° ... I should test that later to see if it frees space.

- He pointed out that even if I have a 1200W PSU (Corsair HX1200 Platinum Plus), I need to check that a 600W connector is available, if I pick anything above 4070 non-Ti.

- He suggested that a 4070 is more or less equivalent to a 3080, would fit, doesn't need specific PSU connection and produces less heat. So this could be the easy path using current computer setup. (We do not have Vegas 20 benchmarks for 4070 I think.)
- I'm used to Asus Strix series but considering the price, I may go with a TUF or even another brand.

- I wondered if if there was other options then eGPU to have an external GPU ... so there are PCIe cable ... I would have though of some kind of rig I could throw behind" the computer case, but these cables don't bend well since they are flat, which would imply placing the GPU at the place under the desk when I put my legs... And apparently these cables are fragile event in the case.

- Edit: The seller also said that regarding Lightroom and other Adobe products, he tested stuff with other client and no matter what hardware they put in, these softwares always run smoother on Apple than on PC.

So after checking some stuff, the 4080 may still be an option, else I'm still pondering between 4070, 3080 or nothing/postpone.

Hopefully TechGage runs through the whole 40XX line with VEGAS before long which could provide a useful datapoint for differences among the models. 4070 and 3080 are both nice upgrades from what you have!

@TTTT

With a modular power supply that you quoted, the required cabling:

  1. may still be in the inventory of cables that came with it.
  2. can be purchased.

"The only spec that you absolutely need to meet in order to run an RTX 4090 is to have at least three PCIexpress 8pin connectors. If you don't have an ATX 3.0 rated power supply and therefore lack the new 16-pin power connector, you'll need to use an adapter, and that needs three PCIe 8 pins cables to power it."

There is zero chance that I would ever consider "eGPU".

The PSU is the same age as 1080 Ti, possibly older, so these connectors didn't exist. Or did they?

I'm not considering it, I hoped there could some more efficient alternative as soon as I heard read about their limitations.

I made some extra space by pivoting a component 90° (I think I gain 1 cm... wow). And today I went to the local shop with my computer so we could measure it more precisely a place a 4070 Ti (33,8 cm) just to see how it fits.
I have approximately 35,xx cm. So it seems like most 4080's can fit and some 4090's. I think I could actually fit any card if I rearrange some front components.

So now the choice is rather between 4080 and 4090... Thinking of power consumption... right now I'm thinking 4080 slightly more likely than 4090... I'll still think about it while the PSU cable gets shipped.

Looks like an AI, in his 2nd last message he recommends a video game review site, but links to a scammy gambling review site, dumb sort of mistakes AI make.

4080 with it's 16GB of Vram is enough for most things, 24GB good if you're using more than one piece of software that uses Vram at the same time, not even actively using them, but have 1 or more software open standing by reserving/holding Vram while actively using Vegas. Depending on how you work Vram could be a decider even if the processing speed difference isn't.

I was working for hours on various sorts of video and image production software last night, including other NLE's , no crashing. I wanted to publish as soon as possible so I chose Vegas to assemble the finished media as I work the fastest, crashed within 3-5mins and caused delays. 40 series to blame? or myriad of other reasons ONLY Vegas crashes, who knows!

Make sure to come back after your purchase and let us know if you notice any changes in stability. Hopefully you won't, and I can work on removing every trace of Vegas and plugins from hard drive and registry and try a clean install.

So, I got MSI RTX 4080 Suprim X.

Quick tests:

  • Vegas: According to the benchmark I just done, I lost some efficiency at rendering (see benchmarks for Vegas 20 in @RogerS signature.
  • Vegas: But, the preview window seemed somewhat smoother. (Will have to re-check that in heavier projects).
  • Lightroom: Randomly browse and applied filter in an existing album. Feel a bit smoother than before, not much. But I will only be able to tell a difference in lightroom next time I have a long work to do in it.
  •
  • Satisfactory (game) : Used to turn GTX 1080 Ti into a grill (Even after replacing its thermal compound) ... I can now run "Ultra" quality graphics and not hear the fans accelerate.
  • Overall: it runs much cooler than GTX 1080 Ti so far. (Which was an Asus Strix card.)

As expected, I guess I will get better performances improvements for productivity the day I change the GPU+motherboard+RAM etc... (which I didn't want to do right now) ... or if Vegas gets optimised for RTX 4th generation. Seems like a great upgrade on the gaming side (which wasn't my priority but OK...)

Regarding installation, the card was slightly longer then announced in the specs, but I managed to put it in moving some elements that are on the front panel. Haven't been able to install the MSI Suprim X bracket ...

This performance is worse than I'd expect. Can you verify the card is working properly in general? A tool like MSI Afterburner can watch the clocks and more in real time.

What about a free benchmark like 3DMark? (basic edition on Steam is enough for this). Are the GPU performance scores on par with similar NVIDIA GPUs or is there some kind of configuration issue? https://benchmarks.ul.com/3dmark

Your render time improved by 20 seconds but I would really expect more than that.

TTTT wrote on 7/5/2023, 9:44 PM

@RogerS: Not sure how to observe it but while rendering the project in Vegas (and watching YouTube at the same time right now), GPU goes up to 2880 MHz, Mem up to 11201 MHz, sometimes it goes down.
I have not tried tweaking any setting.

I tried 3D Mark free demo (note: it's currently -75% off on Steam) ... but I let the demo play until the end and then I always get "cancelled by user" and a score of 0.

My GTX 1050 mobile gets 1661 for graphics and i7-7700HQ gets 3957 for CPU so you're doing great compared to that.

My 2080 Super gets 11,818 for graphics and i5-13600K gets 16,982 for CPU in TimeSpy.

I'm not so familiar with Threadrippers but thought 16 cores and not being so old would yield better results than this in TimeSpy and VEGAS. Perhaps it's the bottleneck here?

For the 4080 you're using the latest studio driver? That's working fine here for benchmarks and VEGAS.

The 16 cores are all doubled to 32 logical cores.
When I purchased it, I noticed that on some task it wasn't performing better than my i7 6700K. Unless an application could take advantage of the threads as much as possible. And back then it was said that most games did not use more than 4 thread (I don't know how it is now, and not sure about production software).

I have never compared it much to other CPUs ... I know that the 3950X (+10%), 5950X (+20%) and even the 7950x (+40%) didn't feel like it was worth upgrading, for their price.

I talked with the guy from the shop where I purchased the GPU, I wanted to know if he had hints on how to install the brand-specific "MSI Suprim X support bracket" (which ... I can install it, but it keeps falling).

I also asked if the presence in my system of that very old "Asus Xonar Essence STX" card could bring the CPU performance slightly down. He said, it's possible so I should try removing it. But he also suggested that the presence of 3 NVMe M.2 drives could also explain it because each of them uses "2 CPU lines" or something like that... I'm quite ignorant of those "CPU lines", so maybe this explains that.

Not lines but PCIe lanes. Check the motherboard manual for information.

The sound card probably isn't taking up more than one.

@TTTT said: "But he also suggested that the presence of 3 NVMe M.2 drives could also explain it because each of them uses "2 CPU lines" or something like that... I'm quite ignorant of those "CPU lines", so maybe this explains that."

To make it worth wasting an M.2 slot the drive
