There is also a temporary discount upgrading from the original Badaboom mentioned here:

Hopefully the quality of the encodes will be a little better with this new version. I keep using Handbrake because although it encodes way slower, it is just so much better looking at the end of the encode for any given bitrate.

Still no go with the Avid codec unfortunately. Just a plain deinterlace which looks pretty horrible compared to a Handbrake decomb. Very fast though. I'll upgrade because it's only $15, but I don't see it getting much use other than to quickly rip a DVD now and then.

They do claim that the quality has been improved. I'm playing with it now.

All I can get it to do is give me a "The transcoding engine has failed to start" error message. Each time it fails it counts down one from the allotted 30 trial runs. The original Badaboom ran fine on my hardware.

Laurence, Musicvid has been experimenting with the Helix I420 codec as an alternative intermediate to DNxHD for Handbrake. He seems to prefer it. Maybe you could give that a shot with BadaBoom? The files are 5 times as big but it renders faster. It's a separate download from Vegas.

Badaboom uses the Open Source library FFMpeg for file I/O and will only read AVI files with codecs such as MPEG2, etc. Basically Cineform, Avid and even Debugmode Frameserver's internal codec will not work with Badaboom, even version 2.x. The file videocodecs.txt lists all valid codecs (see below). That's the continuing bad news.

The good news is that as an h264 encoder, it is lightning fast with an nVidia GPU. It also supports unattended batch encoding. Unfortunately, other than an uncompressed AVI, there aren't too many options for input to Badaboom.
