"They are totally missing the point with this device."
Yes, you can buy an iPad for more money than a notebook computer which has far greater capabilities. The brilliance of this from a marketing standpoint is that Steve Jobs convinced millions of folks that this is a good thing. What a bunch of lemmings!
"They are totally missing the point with this device."
I don't think "missing the point" has anything to do with it. I figure they were simply snookered into believing it to be a BMW.... but when they got it home they found it to be more of an Austin mini instead ;)
The point of this device is that after a generation of computers with so many connections and interoperability options, we don't understand why we should step back from that to a much more closed system, or something like that, i guess.
Ok, maybe i would find interesting things to do with an iPad. But surely i can accomplish many more interesting things with a netbook at half the price, and have all those connections included ... and an actual keyboard too.
So i guess the point is that if you're offering less than what i've already got, i should expect to pay less than what i've already paid.
Maybe i am becoming quite the luddite. At work last friday the customer service department invited me over and wanted to talk to me about Google TV and have me explain all the exciting new aspects of it to them. I kinda disappointed them. I said, "you wanna know how excited i am about Google TV?" I held up my thumb and finger pressed together and said "the only reason this doesn't represent my level of excitement is because there's still a film of air my fingers apart, and i'm less excited than that."
Why?
Because i have my computer screen in front of me, and i like having "computer" on my computer. I have my TV next to me and i like having "TV" on my TV. I don't want TV on my computer interfering with the computer stuff i'm doing, and i don't want computer on my TV interfering with my enjoyment of what i'm watching. Combining the two doesn't strike me as improving the experience. In fact, it seems quite the opposite.
Funny this is an editing forum and the video camera features have not been mentioned yet. I own a motorola Cliq Android Phone and the video function is garbage. It looks pretty good while shooting but the encoder crunches the heck out of it. On the other hand, I have incorporated vertically shot iPhone footage into an HD project and it cut in surprisingly well. I know other Android phones may have a better camera, but I haven't seen them (and John's Droid cam isn't so hot either). Next gen iPhone is supposed to include 720p video, too.
I'm not bashing Android, either. One needs to take into account the build quality of the phone as well. Personally, I can't see giving up the full keyboard on my Cliq for a touchscreen only phone.

John, have you actually used an iPad, or are you extrapolating from your netbook experience?
From the Windows developer's post:
1. Instant on. It just works. I want to check email, look at my schedule for the day, look at Facebook, view something on YouTube, check out some news headlines, or just watch a movie, the iPad (and future devices of its class) are just much more convenient.
Yes, I've played with an iPad extensively. Some of my Apple zealot friends couldn't wait to come over and show me their new iPads. I got quite the tour and the evangelistic sales pitch. One of them insisted that I play with her iPad for a few of days so, yes, I've used it. (Hmmm, that actually sounds a little dirty.)
"If I just want to check something out on Wikipedia or check a web page, nothing beats the speed of an iPad"
I just whip out my Droid, it's always within arm's reach, it's always turned on and being on the Verizon Network, I can get on the Internet pretty much anywhere. I even have my choice of browsers and the Droid has an actual keyboard. The iPad is really nothing more than an unwieldy, large iPhone (without the phone.)
As an aside, Martin Cooper, the guy that invented the cell phone, uses a Motorola Droid and loves it.
Writing-intensive iPad users use Bluetooth keyboards (same as for Mac computers), and there are 3G iPads now.
All the iPads are on allocation in the stores, but the wait is less than a week (sales are up since the introduction, primarily to those who don't get their joy from watching an OS expose its underwear).
...being on the Verizon Network, I can get on the Internet pretty much anywhere.
Yeah, in places where AT&T has poor or non-existent 3G coverage, I would settle for half the download speed and no data access while on the phone, too.
If I lived in SFO or NYC, I would have been on Verizon also, but in L.A. and between L.A. and SFO AT&T sure works well with great speeds even in the sticks.
Martin Cooper must have seen his biceps atrophy since his original Motorola phone was, um, top banana...
Have you been using an iPad? Although they're not for everyone, I see the appeal & think folks will come to use them in ways that haven't been thought of yet because this product hasn't existed before. Question, though: the combination of being fairly heavy & having a completely smooth back seems to make the iPad fatiguing to hold. Have you found that to be the case? I think they need to give up a little of the ultra-modern style and make it a little easier to grip on the next version.
Yes, I spent about a week using one before passing it on to the person I bought it for (had to make sure it was working properly :O).
I did not find the iPad fatiguing to hold, because I either used it on a table, on a dock, or my favorite way, on my knees while lying down on a couch. That is also the position shown on billboards across town here, so others must like it too.
Apple's optional case for it has a unique feature: the top flops backwards and turns it into a stand. Works very well.
One thing I'm curious how they pulled it off is how YouTube videos look far better on the iPad than on any PC or Mac, whether with a $50 graphics card or a $1500 Quadro FX card,
And everything is instant, which is a great pleasure, and the multi-touch needs only 2 minutes of usage or less before you wonder why anyone would want to surf any other way.
There are even IT folks using LogMeIn to support 1500 PCs and Macs around the clock, and they much prefer this on their night stands over a laptop next to their beds...
I'm planning to get my own in July, after I'm done supporting my poor uncle who needs some extra money right now (his name is Sam).
The first app I'll get will be one that makes the iPad a Mackie MCU-compatible control surface for Vegas (and other NLEs). It is already out and has gotten good reviews.
Yeah... a "windows developer" nick-named "frogboy"
First, he didn't say "windows developer", he said "windows software developer".... and that could be anything. Heck, these days it seems that just about every second person you bump into on the net is some kind of self proclaimed "Software developer". Get your facts straight.
Second.... the trouble with the internet is that anybody can write anything and sign their name as President of the USA and there is no way to verify it. For all we know... 'Frogboy' is you. What you have here is merely an opinion from some unknown. And even if 'Frogboy' was known, it's STILL just an opinion. And as already pointed out there are PLENTY of counter opinions
This thing is just a TOY for people who like toys.... NOTHING more. If you're expecting more than a toy's performance.... you WILL be disappointed as can be easily seen by doing a search.
It's overpriced and underpowered. You can't really do anything with it that you can do with a decent laptop. It is extremely uncomfortable to use, even if you put it on a table and don't hold it it's such a crappy position compared to having a laptop screen that you can adjust at whatever angle you want/need.
It is truly a device for people who don't know what to do with $500 - $1000.Do I burn it or do I get the iPad. You are probably better off burning it because all you'll get from the iPad are aches and pains from the uncomfortable use and/or irradiated testicles/ovaries if you use it on your lap. Joint pain + cancer in one overpriced device.
As for iPhone, who cares what the new one will be like in 2 weeks, when in 2 months you'll have another 10 Android phones with those same or better features.
>>>>Apple has no interest in the volume market. They make "BMWs," not mass market cars.<<<<<
They make Trabants in BMW chasis. They are just as interested in volume as anybody, they just couldn't compete in that market, so they stuck to their old scam which has always been selling you cheap crap in an expensive package and charging according to their packaging and not according to what's really inside.
And that windows developer is retarded if he can't count on his laptop to wake up in the morning. Seriously, WTF are we talking about here?
>>>One thing I'm curious how they pulled it off is how YouTube videos look far better on the iPad than on any PC or Mac<<<
They didn't. They just count on delusional people to actually believe such nonsense.
"Yeah... a "windows developer" nick-named "frogboy"" Agreed! ;-) Apple fanboys are pushing the story with poor sources these days; but the old saying seems to be in play, "Say it three times, then it's a fact!" .
When there is an application that effectively serves some specific need of mine and it only runs on an iPad, then perhaps I will buy an iPad. I am primarily software driven, not hardware driven.
That being said, I kinda like the idea of the iPad, though I think the implementation was a little screwy - Not doing 16x9 in a world of 16x9 media was a dumb thing to do ( but I can just see it being a revision that comes in the future... iPad HD... or some such name) in which case I might be more inclined towards it, since you can hook up a bluetooth KB to it I think and it becomes a super slim touch screen laptop running proprietary software, not necessarily bad software, but not as broad as a laptop would offer.
