OT NewBlueFX Upgrades?

Spectralis wrote on 11/10/2014, 5:28 PM
Just received an email about NBFX revamp. While the new bundles seem very swish I'm not sure why I would want upgrade. I've got nearly all the Video Essentials but some of these FX now appear to be split between Essentials and Elements bundles and will cost me $309 to upgrade. Why would anyone pay to upgrade to something they already own? Secondly, there's now a Titler Pro 3 Ultimate and it costs $200 to upgrade from TP 3 Pro. Why?

If the revamp introduced completely new FX then upgrading would make sense but this looks like a repackage of what I already own. Maybe I'm missing something here so could somebody please enlighten me?

Re branding and re-packing are common market strategies. Nothing new here at all and it makes sense for the company. The appeal is to get new customers, because for the most part that is determining their growth. Yeah, I know you complain, and say where is the strategy to keep loyal repetition...well that gets ever so complex for a small company with limited product - so unfortunately you have to wait to see if they get bigger.
Tell your friends to buy NewBlue in the market today, if they don't have the plugins.

Why? What is that going to do besides put money in their pocket ? What am I missing ?

Why would I tell my friends to buy a repackage of what they already have? The question I was asking was whether these repackaged bundles include anything new that's worth upgrading for $309? I could care less about any business that repackages stuff I've already got and tries to sell it back to me in a new form. I could get a lifetime membership for Red Giant Universe for $90 more. Or the upcoming Hitfilm 3 Pro for $10 less which includes loads of plugins that can be used in Vegas.

Good grief folks, you must be living on the dark side of the planet? Whooa, read my post very carefully and absorb.
I would not disagree with buying a companion product - but skip HitFilm and go for Boris Continuum if you are on VegasPro13 - that would be money whole lot better spent - if you are already loaded on NewBlue.

I own several VIdeo Essentials, plus Colorfast, plus one or two other New Blue packages. I think the new packages make more sense than the old packages. For example, there is some redundancy among the Video Essentials packages. The new tiers I, II, and III eliminate those redundancies.

If I was starting from scratch I would prefer the new packages. But because I have everything I need with my current packages, it doesn't make sense for me to upgrade further.

Kimberly

I tend to agree with Kimberly on why upgrade when you already have what you need. I guess I found it a bit insulting to ask me to toss in another $160 to update Titler Pro 3 after I just purchased it along with some preset packages. (Yeah, I get that it is repackaged with additional presets, but that is a lot of cash for the utility of just those.) The rub comes in maintainability of prior purchases. Ya gotta upgrade to maintain maintainability or so goes the sales pitch.....

I don't plan on buying any upgrades, and have several credits for a variety of plugs.
jetdv wrote on 11/11/2014, 1:27 PM
NewBlue has worked hard to provide you excellent value for the plugins received. The new app manager is something everyone has been asking for. With the new app manager, all activations, deactivations, check for updates, and other information is now available in one location.

We do believe the new plugin organization makes more sense as well. We have also worked hard to give the proper credits for previous purchases to allow reasonable priced upgrades based on those purchases. So, for example, if you own all 7 of the Video Essentials series, you would get $239 towards the Elements ($299-$239=$60) product, $258 towards the Essentials ($399-$258=$141) series, and $187 towards the Filters ($399-$187=$212) series. So it is a significant discount and the discount could be even higher depending on the other products you have purchased in the past.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask NewBlue directly at support at newblueinc.com

+1 for Edward's explanation. As I said, if I didn't already own what I need, I would find the new packages very appealing : )

Hold on a minute! The new app manager is not an upgrade. That's something that should have been developed ages ago. I've already paid for x64 versions of the NewBlueFX which many other FX developers gave away free. Now I'm supposed to pay for an app manager?

Based on your post we're being asked to part with large amounts of cash for a reorganisation of the plugins. How is that new or a significant discount? I bought Titler Pro 3 with Vegas so the upgrade issue is relevant here. There isn't a NewBlueFX forum and, as customers, we've always had to air our concerns here and at other forums because of that inconvenient oversight. Maybe when a forum is set up we'd be charged for that too!

In a nutshell what I'm questioning is the way these upgrades offer no new features to the FX that we already own. We can't just upgrade what we already own either, the reorganisation of the bundles forces us to upgrade to new plugins that we might not even want at a significant cost if we want to ensure compatibility with newer Vegas releases.

It's like going into a shop to buy a new computer part and being told we have to buy a whole lot of other parts before we can upgrade the one we want. Whoever decided on a marketing strategy like this during a recession (or otherwise) needs their head examined.

Edward, I have to agree with most of the posts above. I see no reason to upgrade from what I already have at a pretty expensive price just to get back to were I was.

NewBlue might be excited about their new website. I'm not. Seems like another way to ask for more money from me without offering much of value.

I'm disappointed at NewBlue. Poor, poor marketing and thinking what is best for the customer. James

I feel the same way. The only thing these upgrades give me is potential future bug fixes since the current stuff is now collecting dust. In fact, a lot of what I have has disappeared from the new plug-ins. So my "upgrade" is for stuff I do not want just to keep my current stuff up to date.

The new organization does make sense going forward, but makes little sense for those with a current stake in newBlue stuff.
CJB wrote on 11/26/2014, 9:23 AM
@NormanPCN Well said. While I agree this is a good move for future customers the rearrangement has somewhat screwed over the existing base. The upgrade/maintain-grade options are way too expensive. I bought TP3 just a few months ago and am being asked to pay only $150 to crossgrade to the latest arrangement. Yeah there's more content but I don't need it or want it.

I understand your confusion and will do my best to clear some things up for you.

As a start, please see the blog article, "You Won't Plugin Believe This", which gives a great overview of what's changed. It's worth a read.

https://newbluefx.com/blog/you-wont-plugin-believe

Because there are no longer direct upgrade paths from NewBlueFX legacy products to the new products, the transition is less simple. In order to protect our customers, we've provided significant discounts on our new Ultimate line depending on the products you own. You can learn more about the Ultimate Upgrades program here:

http://nbfx.co/upgradeFX2

As for specific features, in addition to the new App Manager for all products, you'll find the following:
- New Attack/Release feature found on 18 plugins throughout the product line.
- New drop shadow effect on all included 3D transitions.
- New mirror and stretch fill modes on RGB Shift effect and transition.
- Smoother warping and better tint application in Traveling Rays effect.
- New mix control on AirBrush effect.
- Cleaner output, smoothing and alias suppression with Metallic transition.
- New smoothing and broader warping in Liquify transition.
- Anti-aliased outlines in Picture-in-Picture effect.
- Better contrasting result in Shiny Fog transition.
- Anti-aliasing and better line control in Sketch.
- Cleaner results in Color Wash transition.
- Industry aspect ratio black bar presets for 16:9 projects in Aspect Ratio effect.

The problem is that the Essential FX bundles appear to have been spread across the new bundles which means that upgrading plugins I already own will cost me $309. While some of the list of improvements are relevant to my plugins, many aren't in which case the upgrade price seems incredibly steep. I don't view an app manager as an "upgrade". It's main purpose is to ensure plugins are registered. Ease of updating is an ancillary benefit. I don't recall Adobe, Red Giant and other developers touting their app managers as upgrades. It feels like this is being focused on because there's not much else to advertise.
Dexcon wrote on 11/27/2014, 6:53 AM
Like so many who have posted here, I find little reason to upgrade notwithstanding NBFX’s upgrade credits. Yes, the attack/release settings on transitions is attractive, as is drop shadows on 3D transitions, but little else appeals enough to upgrade.

Similar to dancerchris, why do I need to pay another $US200 (that’s the offer they’ve given me – not $160 that dancerchris said he was offrered) to upgrade TP3 to basically the same version with a few extras (i.e lower 3rds) that I don’t use or need. Worse still, I have ongoing problems with TP3 in that it drops frames both on preview and on rendering. I’ve reported it months ago to NBFX and apparently it possibly has something to do with the ATI R9 270 video card – but it still happens today.

In http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=911648&Replies=3 jetdv advised to make sure that the latest version of TP3 – 141009 – is installed. But my version is 140827 (I think) and that is the latest version according to its update link as well as via My Account on NBFX’s web site. Perhaps the 141009 version is the version available only by upgrade under the new NBFX arrangements. With my latest project (moving into 4K via AX100 but final project will be full HD), I’ve given up on TP3 due to the dropped frames and moved on to Boris Red, the results being way more stable and reliable. In fact, I have just today moved up to BCC9 - currently 30% off everything under Boris’ black Friday offer.

And the new HitFilm Pro to which I have upgraded looks just brilliant.

There is no doubt that NBFX’s new packages are excellent for new purchasers – as pointed out earlier by Kimberly – but I feel much the same as others that existing users/purchasers (and I’ve checked how much I've spent on NBFX over the past few years– it’s frightening to see the total) are disappointingly being taken for a ride on NBFX’s upgrade offer. And what’s more, NBFX’s black Friday offer is rather limited as it does not include Total FX, an offer – if offered - that I may have taken up to retain maintenance of previous purchases.

It looks like Boris and HitFilm are now my new go-to FX programs.

One problem is like most are saying. Why put out more money of something you have.

The other problem is the beta testers. I was asked to be a tester and after doing it and the programs came out online for sale, did not get even a good discount or offer some free stuff for testing their programs.
Spectralis wrote on 11/27/2014, 9:42 AM
Even with the 30% discount I'm still paying $216 to "upgrade" plugins that I already own just to stay current with few other new features. In comparison I've just been given a free copy of Hitfilm 3 Pro because I bought their plugin bundle for about the same price in a sale awhile back. They also use an auto update alert in all their software as standard at no extra charge.

Dexcon, you can certainly have build 141009 today. I just checked the "Check for Updates" file on the website and it's showing:

http://www.newbluefx.com/downloads/Windows/NewBlueTitlerProForWindowsSetup30-141009.exe

as the current download file. Yes, you can use that link to download it now.

Here's the last few fixes listed in that file:

140827 Fix "When adding keyframes, the UI now properly refreshes."
141010 Fix "Resolved issue with packages plugging into Titler Pro 3
141010 Fix "Resolved flashing issue with AMD/ATI video cards"
141010 Fix "Resolved some activation issues."
141010 Fix "Resovled issues matching timecode lengths with NLE"

So I am unsure why you would not be seeing the update as available as the file has certainly be updated on the server and was uploaded nearly 1.5 months ago.

jetdv,

I have Titler Pro 3 build 140725 and 'check for updates' reports it 'up to date'. When l sign-on to my NB account and select download for Titiler Pro 3 download shows build 140827 from old.newblue.fx.com. I could not *find* the same link you posted 'check for updates' on the NB website.

I think you'll need to take this up with the NB Webmeister?

Cheers

Thank you, Edward, for posting the link for the TP3 141009 version. I am especially happy to see that the flickering/flashing problem with ATI cards has been resolved - that is a great relief.

Yesterday, I checked "Updates" on TP3 version 140827, and it still showed 140827 as being the most recent version - and the download link from My Account on NewBlueFX's website - as of about 15 minutes ago - still only has the 140827 version available for download.

I have TP3 build 140516 and have been waiting to get an update for some time now. I use Edius 7 almost exclusively now, so I only check these threads for update info for Titler Pro 3 occasionally. Interestly, I copied the link jetdv posted above and tried to download build 141009; however, it only downloaded an earlier version and it failed to install (never had that problem before).

So, I'm confused, do we have to buy updates for previously purchased TP3 now or what. Because the version I'm stuck with needs many improvements just to work smoothly. I sure hope that's not the case - help and THX!

Same here Grazie. Actually for me, the TP3 check for updates feature has never worked. I have had to manually update. TP2 and all my other NB products have had successful check for updates, so it is not my NET connection which has been the NB response.
