Just learned from the folks at Red Giant Software, they are going to stop providing software for Vegas users--"there just aren't enough" were his exact words.
Magic Bullet Looks will be discontinued as a result.
I just tried it on a 3-minute clip (SD, not HD) in Vegas10c, and it still works fine.
I'm on Windows7 32bit; that may or may not make a/the difference...
I don't think our numbers are falling. I get the impression they got some kind of deal with Adobe.
Anyhow, I always believed it was overpriced and thankgod we have BCC 7 which turned out to be a great deal.
I end up using it more and more, BCC 7 is truly amazing and support is really great.
I thought our numbers were growing not falling. That's a real shame considering we FINALLY have a decent plugin API in Vegas.
In theory, with the new API if Red Giant (and others) use that API they have support for multiple NLE's.
Here's my thinking: with the tools Vegas already includes more people make due with what they got vs buy a separate plugin. IE some of the stuff in Looks can be duplicated with the standard Vegas color FX, and it previews/renders a lot faster. Last week I pulled off some neat stuff with Vegas alone, some stuff that in other NLE's you'd need a separate program for (all I had at my disposal was Vegas, Gimp & Blender).
agree with thf - looks was a convenient button push, but not anything that can't be achieved in vegas alone.
since moving exclusively to v10/64 (and so saying goodbye to 32bit plugins) i'm beginning to find a whole new world of chaining fx to give me UNIQUE looks... definitely more work, but certainly more satisfying
That's why I have been fighting with SCS about order in folders in Plugin Manager : have about thousand of presets (chains) which can simulate similar looks like Red Giant Looks. Don't appreciate this kind of effects too much.
Instead of that I can see there is still a lot of place for creative tools and effects. I have NewBlueFX Magnifier Glass and very like it. Would like to have similar tools (I treat it as very basic text tool and can't understand it's not present) but for signs, arrows, block diagrams, explication boxes (with tails), thought bubles etc. Also can't understand, why have to make so many gymnastic to draw line on screen ? Cookie cutter is just first aid, nothing else, can't achieve smooth animation of objects created with CC.
Tools like Trapcode would be very appreciated to simulate painting with light. Other : camera mapper, DOF for camera track, depth effects.
I love BCC7 but it's very acute that it still can't work in 3 even 2 monitor setup (all plugins connected with 3D transformations). Hope BorisFX will soon resolve this problem.

Users or Sales?
If Red Giant finally released a 64 bit version of looks etc, they would have sold more!
We dont want 32 bit plugins anymore. And they should know that. Crazy not having 64 bit versions. Shot themselves in the foot i'd say.
Personally speaking, I always thought LOOKS was kind of a useless product. You can can achieve the same in vegas itself (and save as presets) without spending the extra money
MB Looks is very powerful and I have seen nothing in Vegas that can replicate it. However, I get the feeling that most people are looking at Magic Bullet *Quick Looks* and calling that "Looks". They are totally different products.
The one that comes, or at least used to come, with Vegas is Quick Looks as is very limited. MB Looks is very full featured, and it's a royal pain to even begin to replicate it with Vegas alone.
The whole question of "our numbers are falling" is pretty moot really.
There's systems in use in this industry with a user base in the low hundreds and they get plenty of 3rd party support. at the other end of the scale there's zillions of users of iMovie and WMM and not much 3rd party support at all.
It all comes down to the question of what the users of an NLE are prepared to spend and that's largely driven by where the bulk of the users sit in the marketplace. If a user group is churning out product that generates $1 billion in revenue per month a 3rd party only needs to tap a very small percentage of that to be viable or at least to think it's worth a shot at getting a slice of the pie. At the other end of the scale there's no doubt a very large number of iMovie licences out there but gross revenue from those users is piddling, the pie is very, very small. Exactly where Vegas fits into that scenario I haven't a clue but judging by the number of people here saying they can get "close enough" without using MBL probably answers that question to some extent.
If you're billing your time at $500 / hour then you'd hardly think twice about spending $1000 on a plugin to give you a certain "look" with a few mouse clicks. Also your clients probably want that "exact" look, why risk getting them offside.
If you're billing your time at $50 / hour then you can spend a lot of hours tweaking away and close enough is probably more than good enough for your clients.
Given that many are saying they can get a look that's pretty close I'd assume their time is not worth enough and / or their clients are not demanding enough to justify the outlay. That's in no way to be taken negatively. There's a lot of goodies in this game that I can see the value in but not at where I sit in the market.
think bob has hit the proverbial nail on the head....
you give your clients what they're willing to pay for. mm2 users (if they have any clients at all), probably wouldn't dream of spending a dime on plug ins (doesn't pixelan make some for mm?).
on the other hand, if you're producing a 30" tvc for airing at the superbowl with a budget in excess of $150k, you'd probably buy whatever's required.
we vegas users have a range of plugins, from spicemaster through to genarts, and if our clients are paying he bill, we'll buy what's necessary to satisfy them (and perhaps our own creative urges). personally i'm going to buy genarts sapphire because it can give my work a unique look (when ALL the fx work properly in vegas!). then again, as much as i thought mbl a very capable plugin, it wasn't offering all that much for the money ($400) when you could probably achieve the desired 'look' with a bit of built in tweaking.
i think (hope) ofx is going to be the future of plugins, and i'm sure, judging from the growing plethora of them out there that vegas too will benefit from their development...
If FX consists of technology (feasibility), then we should talk about value (not price) and this value could be rebuilt and recovered in every moment in time (this is task for marketing)... because technology is always perceived as pure source of competitive advantage. If mood on the market is gloomy, then people don't have enough money to buy technolgies, but they are still wanting them.
If FX consists only incorporated services (facility), then we rather should talk about price, there is ongoing proces of pauperization for product like this, value almost impossible to recreate because of margin recognition and learning process. If mood on the market is called 'recession', then people don't want to buy product like this, because they prefer to make all this tasks by themselves. Nobody wants to exchange services during recession : this is very strong feedback, source and result of recession simoultanously.
I have to admit, I don't know MBLooks, I'm just writing about Quick Looks - for sure this product is from facility group. To keep product like this alive, it should be recreated and renowned two times every year.
So as of now, the Red Giant stuff is still usable in the 32bit version of Vegas, right?
It means the just won´t support it anymore or take it any further?
Ironic, because I was checking out Looks or possibly even the whole discounted Magic Bullet Suite package just today...
I was told that they no longer offered support in Vegas beyond version 8. Now, having said that, the tech support guy proceeded to help with with my 9.0e problem.
Like Bob said above, the time saved with MBL more than pays for itself in one project.
Also, I would be really interested in seeing the results of those who can get the same "look" in Vegas alone.
Thanks Jay.
So, just to make sure I get this right, if I install my 32 bit Version of Vegas 9.e on my 64bit systerm, I can use Looks without any problem?
My understanding is you would have to run Vegas as a 32-bit program, also. I've read--if I read it correctly--that you can have both versions 32 & 64-bit on the same machine.
However, I would strongly suggest you check with someone more 64-bit
savvy that I am.
I have checked MB Looks, to recognize difference in relation to Quick Looks. It has advanced editing options, but mostly it's still colour management, lens effects, diffusion and directional gradient. I would not buy this product (for this price) even there was a statement, that new version for Vegas is knoking to door...
Instead of that I have found message :
"Now includes Sony Vegas 8 support !!!" (for 32bit only).
It tells everything. Suppose, people from RedGiant can see figures in their budget. They know exactly, that there is no market for product like this on Vegas host.
I have Vegas 10 32bit and 64bit... if I wanted to use MB Looks, I can use it with the 32bit Vegas, not the 64bit.
I must say that I haven't used MB Looks for a while, primarily due to the fact that I always use 64bit. Also, I really like some of the MB Looks templates once rendered, but for some reason, they always looked very odd during preview (noisy, darker than renders), and it was difficult to tell how the final render was going to look. So now I primarily use VASST ReelPaks for Color Correction.
