OT: Sudden XP Pro problem

Coursedesign wrote on 8/22/2008, 2:17 PM
This problem just started cropping up on 2 of my XP Pro systems:

1. I open a PDF a) from a web link in IE or Firefox, or b) from Windows Explorer.
2. Adobe Reader or full Acrobat opens and the PDF is displayed.
3. After about 3 seconds, the Reader (or full Acrobat) closes.

This just started and I don't even know where to look. Really weird.

Anyone else seen this? Any solutions?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Coursedesign,

It's not XP problem, it's Adobe problem. Try these links:

Bjorn,

If none of the above works for you, you may want to check the knowledge base for whatever Virus Software you are using. I know that Norton Internet Security has caused problems with Adobe Acrobat in the past, for example.

Thanks for all your help!

One of the machines was running Trend Micro Internet security, the other was a fresh machine with no AV installed yet.

Although the latter has gotten more risky. It is no longer sufficient to just go to "safe" web sites."

eWeek reported in their Aug. 18 issue that Coreflood Trojan attackers were successful by avoiding IM and e-mail which get a lot of attention, and picking a hosting provider and doing a mass attack of every single web page on each server. Then they would calmly wait for users, particularly domain administrators with high-level rights...

I'm using Foxit Reader too and so far I like it. Adobe Reader is just so enormous for what it does.

I hope you find an answer to your situation. There have been times in the past when something suddenly begins to misbehave, and after exhausting all possible solution I can think of, I am forced to go back to a recent image. Then all is good again.
