OT: SyncBack - Really nice backup program

I just thought I'd let you know about a really nice backup program that I have started using called SyncBack.

I spent a long time looking for a robust program that could do both local backups and backups to a server by FTP. This fits the bill and has worked nicely for me so far.

The free version has plenty of options for backups and sychronisation. There are paid versions too and I will probably upgrade to SyncBack SE which supports UTF-8 since some of my files include Thai characters and they got skipped by the free version.

(and no, I don't have any affiliation with the company)

Been using SyncBack Free for years now. I can also vouch that it is a phenomenal little program. Never done me wrong.

I have been using SyncBackSE for many years. As a general rule, I want the content on external hard drives to be exact copies of the content on my internal drives.

I often reorganize the folders on my internal drives (for example d:). Therefore I choose “Mirror” as the backup option in SyncBackSE. If I move “File1” from folder “A” to folder “B”, the file is copied from my internal drive (d:) to folder “B” and deleted from folder “A” on the external drive. If you don’t choose Mirror, the file ends up in both folder “A” and “B” on the external drive.

Another example: If you delete “File 1” on your internal drive the file will still exist on your external drive if you don’t Mirror the two drives. In this example SyncBackSE will delete “File 1” on the external disk since it no longer exist on the internal drive (when the backup option is “Mirror”).

Yep - I have had the pay version for several years now and it works very well (and you can have it on 5 pc's too with one license). They have a good support forum with a bunch of good people there that are good about answering questions ( you can check out their forums at http://www.2brightsparks.com/bb/viewforum.php?f=16 and see what you think). I have several profiles that run every night and back photos etc up to my Linux machine and a different hard drive on the main machine etc.

I would also give AutoVer a try a real time backup program so as files are changeed or created on your main folder the copy is updated at the same time (or versions of)

Just installed on my main office PC where I have mail, bookkeeping etc. and I just love it.

I just love thoose small utils that just get the job done, and I think that this freeware version actually is quite advanced :-)
