To give its correct French name "Le Ballon Rouge". Have just rewatched this classic after a gap of 50+ years and am as intrigued as ever as to how this sort of thing was done in the days of film.
It is on You Tube but best watched in full def. An interesting pictorial of the streets of Paris in the 50's on its own, the animation could no doubt be replicated today by many Vegas users. But how then???
By the way it won an Oscar in 1956.

It's one of my top 10. Thanks for reminding me of its simplicity.

Red Balloon is a stunning achievement on so many levels. It stays with you forever, whether you first saw it in a library on a rainy day in the late 1950s, or whether you first saw it with your young kids, much later in life.

I have often wondered about how the balloon was manipulated, but I have no idea. Some sort of matte?

OK then all I'll tell you is The Red Balloon was recently remade by Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao Hsien as Flight Of The Red Balloon.

A few weeks ago I came across another "balloon" gem:
THE BLACK BALLOON
