Parent Motion - Using multiple pictures for motion tracking slideshow

Mike_RS wrote on 4/3/2017, 5:14 PM

Hi Guys,

First time poster but I've been using these forums for trips and tricks for sometime now, however I cant find an answer to my current issue anywhere so I've signed up for advice..

I'm trying to make a motion tracking photo slideshow, basically I want to put about 30-40 pictures in the frame and then use parent tracking to move between the pictures and zoom in/ out. To do this I've set the resolution of the video to the max available (4096x2304) I've inserted the pictures I want to use and used the event pan/ crop to pull the camera out and reduce their size a little, I don't want to continue to reduce their size too much as the quality of the pictures diminishes and because I'm trying to fit so many in the frame I'm confronted with the problem below.

The photos seem to be cutting off because i suspect its exceeding the max res of the template however I want to move pictures to the corners and basically fill the entire screen in-between with pictures. My example picture below might help you visualise my aim, does anybody know how I can move pictures to the corners of the screen (Where the X is) without them being cut off (red line) & without reducing their size in the even pan/crop and tightening in the parent track using the track motion tool?

Would exporting a file with a crazy res in Photoshop (Lets say 28444x16000) allow me to import this into Vegas and just zoom in/ out using the event pan/crop tool or would that also cause problems too?

Use track motion, not pan/crop for what you want to do.

If you're doing what he last suggests (giant image), pan/crop is exactly what he wants to do. Just an FYI, that image file could be huge. And could crash things (gimp crashed for me, not Vegas).

You don't need to use a 4k project unless you plan on exporting 4k. Set your pan/crop height/width to the project size & just move around the pictures as you please. The pan/crop tool is for panning around events and cropping them too.

Another option, which is much more difficult but lets you get more creative, is to use the track motion in combination with track motion. These videos were done with just pan/crop & track motion:

When using parent track motion it's better to think of the preview window as a stationary camera & you move the world around, not the wold stays put & you move the camera.

One of the initial reasons I stared learning the 3D program Blender was to do what you are wanting to do, but easier.

If I used Photoshop, I would probably stack all the pictures in layers at 1x or 2x the delivery pixel dimensions. Add the resulting .psd file to the timeline with each layer as a Vegas Pro track and use a combination of Pan/Crop and Track Motion to move each picture to full screen over time.

What are your expected output dimensions, 1920x1080 or 3840x2160, etc.?

Thanks for the advice guys, ill give this another shot tonight and see how i get on. I'm outputting in 1080p for the final video and rather than moving the pictures in to the frame I was trying to build a static collage of photos and move the camera over each photo, at the end the camera would zoom out to reveal all 30-40 pictures.

I roughed out a project in Photoshop containing multiple 1920x1080 photos on a larger canvas saved as multi-layer .PNG. I could pan around in Vegas Pro without a crash but the preview was very slow. Perhaps, flattening the file before delivering to Vegas would improve preview performance. This was an abbreviated four corners project as you described in your original post. As tedious as it was, it was better than mowing my grass.

I've tried again without using the event pan/crop tool, Instead I've dragged the images into the track and used the Track motion tool to reduce the size of the image however I'm still running into an issue where the pictures are being cut off and when I make these smaller to fit into the frame the quality is reduced when I try to add some key frames and zoom in using the parent motion tool.

I tried the large Photoshop option but the blank template was over 4gb alone and ended up crashing after 10mins of editing in Photoshop.

I'm starting to re-think the whole concept for the video as it seems a track motion option would be fine if I were using 5-6 pictures but with the 30-40 I have its becoming a big headache.

Before I give up all hope if anybody would be so kind to remote into my computer and troubleshoot what is causing this problem I would be most grateful! I have chrome remote desktop and can give you the one time access pin, if you don't mind doing this please drop me a PM.

Need more RAM for photoshop. :D

1) put all your images on individual tracks.

2) make each track 3d track motion & place in the areas you want.

3) make a new empty track above all the others.

4) make the tracks with the images children of the empty track above.

5) enable 3d track motion for the empty track.

6) enable 3d parent track motion for the master compositing

7) use the parent track motion track for all your motions.

Thanks for all the feedback, I'm following the exact process as described in steps 1-7 by TheHappyFair, however due to the number of images I want to place in the frame I'm having to "zoom out" quite far with the track motion tool (Step 2). When I then go to parent tracking (Step 7) the pictures are all pixelated when I zoom back in. Is there any way to place 40-50 images in the screen in a tile formation and use a tool to zoom in and move around them all without loss of image quality?

  • I have the preview set as Best (Full)
  • I have not cropped resized using the event pan crop tool
  • I have high res pictures in the timeline

Unless something changed between Vegas 10 & 14, there should be no loss in image quality if you're doing how I posted. Track Motion uses the track resolution & since you're keeping the picture @ it's default track motion zoom in, just moving it around, it should look good zoomed in. I just tried in Vegas 10 & zoomed in to -1000 on my parent track motion and the picture still looked crisp.

Your Vegas screenshot is to low resolution to see if you have any settings wrong for track motion.

Vasst did make a product to make video/image walls with ease: http://vasstsoftware.com/product/scattershot3d/

Only issue is it's apparently sold through Sony & they don't have it for sale any more. I can't even access my Vasst account info to get my SN to unlock it. :(

I did this 12 pane project that appears to match your original intent. I found it more productive to use nested projects for the zooms since the pictures can be changed easily.

All the source pictures are 1920x1080 screen shots from video.

If you would like to work with the project files minus the media they are here.

Replace the media in Picture0001M.veg - Picture0012M.veg with your media. The main project is Pictures 1920x1080.veg.

Missing backdrops will be screenshots from your timeline when you get everything scaled to match your requirements.

Apparently, this post can't receive this screenshot... see next post.

I replace pictures normally via the "replace" option when right clicking on something in the project files list. How does nested projects make it easier?

Mike_RS, give me the exact # of pictures & I'll make a wall in scattershot 3D for you & post it here.

You're right about changing pictures being equally easy in any project. The real benefit is that in a nested project the Pan/Crop settings and markers don't get inadvertently displaced when moving along the timeline in the main project. I only have to do the key frames once.

TheHappyFriar wrote on 4/10/2017, 2:09 PM

I'm not using pan/crop for my zooming in on the pictures. I'm guessing just a different way to handle the same situation. :)
